Veteran powerboat racer Shaun Torrente is on a roll—the kind that springs from dedication and hard work—this year. Last month, Torrente and teammate Matt Jamniczky departed Key West, Fla., with a Super Stock-class world championship. When he arrives back home in Southwest Florida this week, it will be with his fourth UIM F1H2O World Championship. The Victory team tunnel-boat driver locked down the title last weekend at the Grand Prix of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates.

Though he would balk at the description, Torrente’s fourth world title places him firmly among the greatest tunnel-boat racers of all time.

Reached via text message this morning, Torrente spoke from the heart.

“I am so thankful for just the physical ability to still be able to do this,” he wrote. “Just 745 days ago I left this race on a stretcher. I didn’t think I would ever be able to do it again. It has been a long road, but I have enjoyed every step of it.

“Sometimes your value isn’t seen until your absence is felt,” he added. “The last two years have taught me my value. And I will never forget it again.”
