I have a new toy.......

Its kind of cool, and rainy today. Spending the day fitting it out, life jackets anchor dock lines etc.. Making up a tool kit, waterproof container for paperwork, flares etc. and just going over everything again looking for stuff I missed. A good relaxed double check is much preferred over a frantic, I was rushing and missed something fockup.

Translation:
"I'm sitting in the boat in the driveway making vroom, vroom noises"
:)

4 to 6 foot steep chop is what they are saying today.

Maybe not first test water.

Maybe second or third test water.

Well, it runs, the thing is REALLY sensitive to tab input. Feels like its going to have plenty of power, just cant get it much above 3000 rpm, and it cuts out hard. pull the throttle back and its fine. Cuts out in neutral or underway. Tomorrow nite I will try a new fuel filter/separator and disconnecting the tach any other ideas????

When I had symptoms like that once, (in my old Nova) it was water in the fuel. But not sure about the neutral thing. Mine would cut out around 3000, but it was because the bow came up as I started to plane. I could idle, but as soon as I would try to get up on plane it would die, until I got that bubble out. The fact that yours does it also at neutral makes me think otherwise.

Don't feel too bad. I have a starter/ring gear slip (no start, just whine) and will require pulling an engine to address.
I usually stay the hell away from the fireworks anyway. It's the boat equivalent of going drinking on New Year's Eve. :)

A kink in the fuel line will do this.....it allows idle, but will starve for fuel when throttling up. This is what killed my Port motor on the Monza, running too lean.

I know its not water, I completely drained the tank and had a look inside. I read one post somewhere that said a bad tach could do it and my tach isn't very smooth.

possibley but Im thinking more electrical because its so consistant and there is no hiccup, pop, sputter etc, its like it just switches off.

If it does it in neutral too I agree it is more likely electrical. Check all grounds. Make sure the distributor housing is grounded. Usually a stud with a small black wire on the bottom of the dist. Make sure the ign modules are grounded properly. Check the key switch for good connections. Check the ten pin engine plug. Spray with wd 40 and make sure all the pins are sticking out the same. Push back in all the way. do not over tighten clamp. If it is not in all the way it could do it.

I had one strange case where the engine would not go over 3000 and the volt meter would go up as the engine started to miss. In that case it was the sensor in the distributor. Odd ball situation there. Make sure you have 12 volts at the coil. You can try it with a jumper lead to by pass the harness switch and all.

What kind of kill switch you got. If it is on the 12v side it could be restricting voltage.
