Search for missing boater along Coosa River to resume Wednesday

The search for a missing boater along the Coosa River has resumed on Wednesday morning.

Childersburg Fire Rescue received a call about a boating accident in the River Run subdivision just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday. A captain with the unit says when crews arrived at the river they found at least five separate pieces of the boat floating in the river, including a fuel cell.

They believe there were two people in the boat. A family member say the missing boater is a man named Steve Tripp. A second person on the boat was airlifted to UAB. That person was reportedly awake and suffering from injuries. Their condition is unknown at this time.

Speed may have been factor in Coosa River boat accident

TALLADEGA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -
The search resumed Wednesday for a missing boater on the Coosa River. The boater, Steve Tripp, is a father of four from Chelsea who owns Revolution Performance Marine in Harpersville.

Captain Michael Patrick of the Alabama Marine Police said Tripp was test driving a power speed boat on Tuesday.

"We know that he had reached 142 [mph] yesterday morning and came back yesterday afternoon to try and increase that to over 150," Patrick said.

Patrick said Tripp was experienced at driving the powerful boats and competed in races across the country. Patrick said speed may have contributed to the accident.

"A boat at that speed is basically flying on the water. Literally flying on the water. If it gets air under it, it can flip," Patrick explained.


Search teams cruised up and down the Coosa River looking for Tripp's body on Wednesday. Patrick said the search has been hampered in part because they can't pinpoint the exact area of the accident. When the boat started to break up, it could have covered a couple of football fields.

A passenger who was with Tripp survived the crash and was treated at UAB Hospital for his injuries. Neither man was wearing a safety vest. Captain Patrick said that was critical.

"[For] the professionals that make a living on the water, right down to the recreational boater, that personal floatation device is a must," Patrick said.

Patrick said the Alabama Power Company is prepared to stop dumping water into the river which increases the current to help with the search.

The marine police captain said the search will continue until Tripp is found. If the search is called off Wednesday, it will resume Thursday morning at daybreak.

Search continues for missing boater on Coosa River

TALLADEGA COUNTY, Alabama - Recovery efforts continue today for a missing boater after a Tuesday crash on the Coosa River.

The missing man is Steve Tripp, owner of Revolution Performance Marine, a company that makes high-performance boats. Authorities said the boat was traveling more than 100 mph when it broke up on the other side of an island just downstream from the U.S. 280 bridge, according to the Talladega Daily Home.

Workers at Revolution Performance Marine declined to comment Wednesday. The search was called off at sunset Tuesday, and resumed early Wednesday.

A second man was thrown from the boat, according to the Talladega newspaper account, and later taken to UAB Hospital via helicopter. Read the Daily Home's full story here.

From what I've heard they were testing a 26' RPM Cat and made a successful 145 mph pass earlier in the afternoon and decided to go out again for another pass. His passenger, Mark, was sitting behind him when the prop blew out and the boat hooked. Mark was flying through the air with Steve in front of him when they hit the water, litterally tearing his clothes off. Mark made it to the surface, grabbed a floating root and made it to the shoreline where some fishermen found him. He was released from the hospital later in the evening with a broken wrist and pretty banged up..he never saw Steve again after they hit the water...Everyone is praying that Steve might also be stranded on the shoreline in need of medical help..Prayers and best wishes for both families and full recoveries

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. (WIAT) — Talladega County rescue crews and marine police have suspended their search for a missing boater and will resume early Wednesday morning.


The man who is missing was testing a boat for a local company. He was thrown out of the boat when it crashed on the Coosa River in Childersburg.

First responders say the boat was speeding along when it suddenly turned, throwing the missing driver and a passenger into the water.

The boat was torn apart by the crash.

“There were several large pieces of the boat floating in the water,” Capt. Tim Shelnut said. “The current was taking it down the river. The person that was injured swam to an island and a fisherman took our medics out there, and they got him in the boat and brought him back.”

Rescue crews continue to search the Coosa River for missing boater, Steve Tripp.

Tuesday, Tripp was believed to be testing a boat with a friend along the Coosa River when something went wrong. When emergency crews arrived, they found pieces of the boat floating in the river.


The other person in the boat was air lifted to UAB hospital.

Multiple search crews continue to search for the father of four. Childersburg Rescue Squad wrapped up their search Thursday just before 5:30 p.m.

We're told the search will continue through the weekend and the search route could change depending on possible severe weather.

Search for missing boater after high-speed crash on Coosa River enters Day 7

TALLADEGA COUNTY, Alabama - Authorities are in their seventh day of searching for a missing boater after a horrific crash on the Coosa River last week.

The Alabama Marine Police and three rescue squads are back out on the water today, said Lt. John Archer. They are searching for Steve Tripp, who authorities say was test-driving a new boat when the crash happened about 2 p.m. on Feb. 18.

Tripp is owner of Revolution Performance Marine, a company based in Harpersville that makes high-performance boats. Archer said Tripp was driving a 26-foot speed boat and was traveling in excess of 140 miles per hour. The boat rolled, and then disintegrated, he said.

Tripp and another man were thrown from the boat. The other man, Mark Kent, was able to swim to safety and then airlifted to UAB Hospital. Tripp has been missing since Tuesday. Archer said the men weren't wearing life vests.

Archer said he doesn't know how long the search will continue. "These things take time,'' he said. "We're going to keep going until someone tells us not to."

Marine police still searching for body of Steve Tripp

HARPERSVILLE—The search continues for the body of Steve Tripp, owner of Revolution Performance Marine in Harpersville.

Tripp was test driving a power speed boat on the Coosa River Tuesday, Feb. 18 when he lost control of the boat, Alabama Marine Police Captain Michael Patrick said.

However, the details of the accident are “still under investigation,” Patrick reported.

Mark Kent, a passenger who was with Tripp during the crash, survived and suffered only minor injuries including some bruising and a broken wrist.

Alabama Marine Police believe that Tripp did not survive the crash, and search teams have combed the Coosa River for his body since Tuesday. However, Tripp’s body has not yet been recovered due to the temperature, depth and current of the water, Patrick said.

“We know we will make a recovery (of the body). It’s just a matter of time,” he said.

Many friends and supporters have posted good wishes and prayers on social media to show support for Tripp and his family.

“We are devastated by the loss. Our thoughts are with his family,” read one post.

“RIP Steve! Prayers for his family and friends!!” wrote another.

Tripp is survived by his wife, Rachel; son, Ryan; and daughters, Jillian, Megan and Sara.

Missing boater search stretches past one week mark

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. (WIAT) — More than a week has gone by, and still nothing has turned up in the search for a missing boater.

Steve Tripp went missing after his boat crashed on the Coosa River on February 16th. Marine Police have searched the area where the boat broke apart, near the Highway 280 Bridge.

A second man was on the boat at the time, he was rescued and taken to UAB hospital.
