For those of you who aren't familiar with the record run, and its history, Stuart held the record at 3 hours and 6 minutes since 1989 in a 32 Skater with Eickert engines. Then, last year, that record was broken by Joe Cibellis and Joe Sgro in their Ilmor powered 43' Outerlimits in September in the Don Aronow Memorial Marathon in 3 hours and 5 minutes (1 minute shorter).
There had been some chatter about the record not being legit for breaking Stuart's, so he reassembled his Recovery Racing group, raised some interest to benefit cancer research, and went after it again with JT and the big 42 MTI cat with 1350 Mercs and Merc #8 drives. He kinda shattered the record, moving the mark to 2 hours and 11 minutes. It was certified by the National Powerboat Association.
I called Stuart to congratulate him. In classic Stuart speak, he said, “I can’t believe we left 11 minutes on the table. We could have run faster….When it got rough, Johnny kept asking if I was all right. I said, ‘At 65 years of age, I’m an old man, not a baby!’ …We could have shaved 11 minutes easily.”
