That's what it's all about, isn't it?
My buddy Mark (also named Mark) gets on this site occasionally under the name "Monk Funk". He had a 32 Fountain for awhile, but for his type of boating on the rivers it was more boat and more work than he wanted, so he downsized to the single 27.
I left Pittsburgh 10 yrs ago, so I'm not current, but I have friends and family there that can guide you.
One thing I remember well - there wasn't coasties on the water there, just Fish & Game cops - "fish-heads". From all my dealings on Erie, coasties were always very cool. Fish-heads on the Allegheny sucked! Hard asses trying to prove they had some authority...
There was a Bruce Willis movie w/ Sarah Jessica Parker that was a "water cop" movie filmed in P-burgh in the '90s that was all done in the area. I don't recall the name. But, the scene where BW jumped a boat over the dam was shot at the end of my grandparents street. My Grandpa was a retired photographer and shot his own video while they were filming it. I think it was dam #5 on the river.
If you find a place to stay "up river" make sure you know what times the dam/locks close. I recall busting azz to get to the locks before they closed on a Sunday evening - otherwise, you were stuck up river and camping. Provided you have a full cooler, it's not a bad thing.
