Still a long drive to Florida. The new Wagoneer L made it a lot more comfortable though.

Left yesterday at 2:45 in the afternoon, arrived here at 10:12 AM today.

Good morning ☀️. Spent the weekend with Eliza. (y) Hung another ceiling fan and help empty stuff from storage unit into the new house. Back home for now.

Yep, the hype is crazy. If you just use the averages for wind speed drop due to the change in air pressure by altitude and friction with the ground, the actual speed based on the real Saffir/Simpson rating:

The maximum sustained surface wind speed (peak 1-minute wind at the standard meteorological observation height of 10 m [33 ft] over unobstructed exposure) associated with the cyclone is the determining factor in the scale.

would drop by about 1/3 from the 1 airplane hurricane reading at 8000 feet. They show a drop with their Radiosonde that measured a highest gust from all flights of 215 at elevation, calculated to be 198 at sea level. It will be really interesting to see what the actual measurements were from the on land certified measuring towers.

They also talk about the one plane had to abandon its mission because of the strength of the storm. What they don't tell you is it returned, was inspected for damage, and went right back out into the storm. There were two planes in the storm, one at 8000' and one at 10000' while they were saying the storm was too strong for planes to venture in.

Why they have to lie and hype is beyond me. A category 4 storm at landfall is crazy bad, A category 5 has sustained winds average over 157 miles an hour at 33' elevation. There is no reason to hype the storm strength, it is bad. We went through the same thing with Ian in 2024. It was reported as a Cat 5, sustained at 160 supposedly, the highest measured gust by a certified weather station was 140. A gust of 140 would make the sustained less than a Cat 4 where the sustained has to be 130 for a minute minimum. Plenty bad......

Doesn't sound "quite" as bad as could have been listening to the experts this morning.
Not that it isn't bad with lots of wind, floods, rain, and storm surge.
Don't really know if 13 foot vs 17 is much better.
Sounds like on to Cuba now.
