Need some pre-purchase input

Ok, the center console cat idea was a bust.

I'm looking at a '94 Century 2300 center console with a '94 200 Yamaha

What's the scoop? Is the Yamaha reliable, a gas guzzler, junk, the best ever? What should I look at what questions should I ask?

It's going to be a long distance purchase so I need to be sure before I make this happen

I was hoping you'd go with the Banana......

I know nothing about Yamaha's. I don't know if Jim does either. If it's not Black, he refuses to work on it......:)

Yamaha is a reliable motor, but I think anything older than 1999 is going to suck a lot of fuel. Do a compression check on the cylinders .

Like Bobcat said Compression test. If its been is salt water it is too old IMO.

I don't work on them but, concede they are good engines.

What would be the average age to expect from a "average boater" taken care of outboard in salt water?

My number is 10 years. I am not saying it won't run longer it just becomes increasing more difficult to fix things when they need fixing.

Everything is frozen from the salt.....I used a blow torch to take a bolt out of my Starboard motor, and when we pulled the powerhead we just cut through the bolts with a grinder....right through the housing !

Thanks for the info guys! Compression is 120,125,120,125,120,125, supposed freshwater river in Florida. I was sent a bunch of scans of work orders for the boat and a trade evaluation sheet from the dealer. Also, by sheer coincidence, I have a transporter friend going to be in the area later this week with his hauler. Sometimes, I trust my gut feelings and I was getting some good feedback with this whole deal from all involved parties, so I decided to go ahead with it. All monies 100% refundable pending transporter's inspection (whom I trust completely). So wish me some luck, sight unseen purchases can be risky...but hopefully not this time. Hope to have her home and in the water this coming weekend or early next week!

Just remember, no matter what, it's nothing money won't fix.......:sifone:
