I have a new toy.......

kill switch does nothing. one thing I thought of, its a newer motor and older drive. preresivoir bravo and the motor does not have the bravo rezzie tank but does have the wires hanging there. could it be thinking low drive fluid and going into guardian? how to test, connect the 2 wires?? could a bad tach do this?

Yes a bad tach could. As could everything else I mentioned. Start by checking the easy things on my list . The ressie wires are for an alarm only. Guardian is a smart craft thing that came out somewhere around 2001. I remember your pix showing a 97 or 98 engine.

So Fridays list of projects, check all the grounds, make a fuel pressure tester, D/C tach, replace fuel filter/separator and I have a touch of an exhaust leak so I will replace a manifold gasket, also check out the cap and rotor. Then I am going to cross my fingers, because if that doesn't do it , its going to get little more expensive. Boats are like uppity women, they just don't want to put out until they think you have spent enough money on them....

In my experience, it usually gets more expensive. :(

I am thinking if it were fuel it would be fine in neutral and act up with a load. I think if it did not have enough fuel pressure it would not run at all off idle. I still think it is electrical. I also think that engine has a plug in coil which makes it hard to put 12 volts to the coil and check the volt while its running.

When the key is on the purple wires should have 12 volts on them. The gauge may read 12 volts at the dash but, the engine may not because of some issue between the switch the ten pin and the engine harness. If the coil is not seeing 12 volts it is not going to rev too well. When it is running the voltage should go up to 14.

I unplugged and looked at the harness connector, seemed ok, clipped the tach wire, checked the grounds, replaced the cap and rotor and fuel water separater. If anything the problem seems to have gotten worse. Im getting a bit frustrated and discouraged at this point.

Well you get points for nice looking. Just some random thoughts. How does it turn over when trying to start? Rapidly or haltingly? Maybe timing. Double check your firing order/plug wire routing. Air intake/spark arrestor obstruction. Plug gaps. Be sure to run a direct hot to coil (and remove it after). Are you positive of the gear ratio in the drive is correct? I had a problem once with Mercruiser sending me some morphidite strange 1.28 - 1 instead of 1.5 - 1 set and the motor wouldn't turn over 3200 rpms. Malfunctioning or intermittently activating momentary kill micro switch for shifting. (there's gotta be a shorter name for that). Good luck

Looks great. On the timing thing. You have to put the engine in to service mode to check and set timing. There is a data connector that you need to connect to pins. Maybe yours has the white wire to ground. need to check.

If it was the white ground kind it would be in the box with the relays. Is there an empty white wire with a female connector on yours.

cutting out more/sooner... Im gonna pull the VST tank apart monday and check the filter. If that doesnt help its time to get it back up to Brians.

worked all weekend, the joy of the healthcare industry. have the next couple days off to mess with it.

So true, its nice to be able to make a difference in peoples lives instead of just punching a time clock.
