A boat caught fire in Key Largo after its owner mistakenly pumped gas into the bilge instead of the gas tank according to Miami Herald news partner CBS4 Miami.

The 25-foot Seapro was being fueled at the Tom Thumb store Saturday morning when the fire occurred.

Key Largo Fire and Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.

Surrounding homes and businesses were temporarily evacuated.

The fire was contained without injury.

The Tom Thumb store remains closed and the Fire Marshall will be investigating the blaze.

Man suffers burns in marina boat fire

A man was airlifted to a Miami hospital Tuesday morning after being severely burned in a boat fire at an Islamorada marina.

The man’s name, age and address were not immediately released Tuesday, but he was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center with severe burns to a large part of his body, said Monroe County Fire Rescue Chief Jim Callahan.

The 11:52 a.m. fire at Caloosa Cove Marina, 73501 Overseas Highway, engulfed a trailered Angler rental boat — officials didn’t know its size — that had just been filled with fuel in the parking lot, said Manager Kim Crouch. The man who was hurt also bought a bilge pump from the marina store prior to the blaze, she said.

“He was trying to hook it (the new bilge pump) up when something sparked and it blew up,” Crouch said. “The boat was burnt to a crisp. There was nothing left of it.”

Crouch told U.S. 1 Radio that the man jumped out of the boat and that some of his skin was coming off as he tore clothes off.

“The T-top melted, that’s how hot it got,” Crouch said.

The man injured does not store the boat at the marina and was just passing through, said Marina owner Sergio Rivera.

Both Crouch and Rivera described the fire as an explosion.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, Callahan said. Responding firefighters first to arrive began to extinguish the fire when they found the injured man, stopped and began rendering first aid.

The man’s condition at the hospital could not be verified. There were no other reported injuries.
