Coast Guard task force intercepts $13M in coke
CITIZEN STAFF

A specialized Coast Guard team aboard a Navy frigate captured a drug boat carrying more than 1,000 pounds of cocaine worth about $13 million Sunday in the western Caribbean Sea. Four suspected smugglers are in custody.

The open boat, about 30 feet long and powered by three outboard engines, was captured in international waters after a Navy airplane spotted it and the Coast Guard crew aboard the USS Elrod intercepted it, according to a Coast Guard press release.

Coast Guard crew members, including snipers, boarded a helicopter and their own fast-response boat to interdict the drug boat, the release states.

The operation was coordinated by Joint Interagency Task Force (JIATF) South, based in Truman Annex in Key West for more than 20 years. JIATF South is made up of DEA, Customs and Border Protection, Navy, Army, Marine, Coast Guard and other U.S. agencies, and is supported by European, Central and South American partners.

Coast Guard assets in the operation were under the command of District 7, which includes Miami and Monroe County.

The Coast Guard boarding crew aboard the Elrod was a specialized, armed team that is used primarily to conduct drug interdiction and security missions.
