One dead, seven saved on sinking charter boat in Upper Keys

Good Samaritans saved seven people from a sinking charter boat that trapped two people and left one woman dead near Islamorada.

Two passengers were stuck inside the hull of the 30-foot commercial diving vessel Get Wet on Sunday as it took on water before capsizing at Molasses Reef.

A onlooker reported the incident and assisted with the rescue along with the Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

A commercial salvage company has been contacted to salvage the vessel.

Also over the weekend, the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Freedom of the Seas and the U.S. Coast Guard teamed up to save a group of men from a makeshift boat off the coast of South Florida. It is unclear if the men were Cuban refugees, who must be repatriated when intercepted at sea.
