MUSKEGON, MI -- A 230-foot-long visiting vessel significantly changed the Muskegon Lake horizon Thursday, June 26.

The luxury yacht named Freedom was clearly visible Thursday morning and into the early afternoon from the Muskegon Yacht Club area as sailboats were moored in the distant foreground of the yacht.

Excluding freighters that visit Muskegon regularly, the yacht was the largest vessel traveling on the lake, even larger than than the 192-foot Lake Express ferry. However, the nearby Milwaukee Clipper, which is docked and available for tours, is larger at 361 feet.

Earlier in the week the ship was anchored in Lake Michigan near Saugatuck. According to a story on MLive.com on Monday, the vessel was in the area on a charter trip from Chicago and was forced to anchor in Lake Michigan as it was too large to dock at the Eldean Shipyard on Lake Macatawa.

According to a website for charters, the ship has eight staterooms and is capable of carrying 27 crew members.

It is equipped with a helicopter landing pad, an exercise room and a deck jacuzzi.
