A man who ran a boat-consignment business stole nearly $400,000 from customers by selling their boats and keeping the money for himself, the Seminole County Sheriff's Office said Friday.
Ralph Smith, 51, of Altamonte Springs was arrested Thursday on a charge of first-degree grand larceny.
Over a decade as owner of Tropical Breeze Boating Center, 3840 E. State Road 46 near Sanford, he sold boats without notifying the owners, investigators allege. Sometimes, Smith forged powers of attorney to fraudulently transfer boat titles to his business or to a buyer, sheriff's documents state.
Deputies also accuse Smith, in some cases, of failing to deliver boats that he had been paid for.
Smith stole nearly $387,000 from more than 20 people in the U.S. and overseas, documents state.
He was being held without bail late Friday in the Seminole County Jail.
