2 rescued from sinking vessel

Two people were rescued from a vessel that was taking on water near the Sand Key Light Saturday afternoon, according to a press release the Coast Guard issued.

The people, who authorities did not identify, were taken to the Hurricane Hole Marina on Stock Island with no medical concerns.

Their 20-foot center console boat had taken a large swell over the stern and was taking on water and partially submerged, according to the Coast Guard, which was notified of the emergency at 3:15 p.m.

The Coast Guard dispatched a 33-foot special purpose craft-law enforcement (SPC-LE) from the Key West station.

That crew rescued the two people, who were transferred onto a Tow Boat U.S. boat, which dewatered the boat and towed it in.

I wonder what happens with a Tow Boat US deal when they get handed a rental boat?

Keys are kinda busy....

KEY LARGO — A Florida Keys man awoke to find unexpected guests Christmas morning, but they weren’t bringing him presents — they were stealing equipment off his boat.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin says the man called authorities early Sunday after spotting someone on his boat docked behind his Key Largo house. He also reported seeing a strange car parked in a nearby vacant lot.

Herrin says deputies found two men on the boat removing electronics. To women were found sitting in the car. Herrin says more electronics also were found in the car, including equipment from a neighbor’s boat.
