2 Coast Guard boats damaged by waves off Cape Cod
CHATHAM, Mass. -- The Coast Guard has begun an investigation after two rescue boats from its Chatham station were damaged by strong waves during a routine mission off Cape Cod.
Officials say the two 42-foot vessels were performing last Friday the daily task of inspecting some dangerous sandbars in Chatham Harbor to determine if the area was safe for other mariners. One of the vessels was hit by severe waves that broke both windows on the bridge and flooded the vessel, knocking out its electronics and steering capability.
The second vessel met a similar fate when it went to help the first one. That prompted the Coast Guard to send a 110-foot cutter, two patrol boats and aircraft to the scene to rescue the rescue boats.
One crewmember was treated for injuries from flying glass.
