Naturally, the focus of the Lake Race will be on the water Saturday and Sunday, June 7-8.


But there’s much more going on during the week leading up to the race, and on the race days as well. Even if you don’t have a boat or can’t view the race, you won’t be left out of the fun. Several venues around the lake are involved in the Lake Race activities.


The Country Club Hotel and Spa just off Horseshoe Bend is the base hotel for the event where many of the pre-race meetings and testing of racers will take place. Other participating hotels are involved in the race, and collectively between 30 and 40 free room nights have been given to race teams with each team getting one free night.


The races, which begin at noon on Saturday, June 7, will be carried live on KRMS Radio (1150 AM). Television stations KRBK and KMIZ and Fox affiliates will carry segments of the race as well. Kansas City and St. Louis media have been invited..

The following is a synopsis of what to expect beginning Tuesday, June 3.


Tuesday, June 3


Lake Race volunteers will gather at Beaver’s at the Lake on The Strip at 6 p.m. to meet with team leaders, to get their assignments, T-shirts and more. Appetizers and beverages will be available.


Wednesday, June 4


Lazy Gators just off Bittersweet Road on Horseshoe Bend will be the location for a Lake Race Pontoon Party from 5-8 p.m.


Pontoon boat owners are encouraged to attend, but all boaters and landlubbers are invited.


The party is being held in conjunction with the Pontoon Races over the weekend, the only sanctioned pontoon boat race in the United States. The race will run the same course as the other boats, and is limited to three-log boats with a single outboard motor up to 350 hp. Racers and boats must pass the same equipment and safety inspections as other drivers and throttlemen.


Iguana Motorsports and Playcraft will have pontoons on display.


Thursday, June 5


The Props and Hoses Fun Run, a poker run similar to Harbor Hop and sponsored by Lake Area Firefighters, will be held with 11 waterfront bars/restaurants participating. Breakfast and registration will be at Camden on the Lake in Toad Cove from 9-10:30 a.m. Breakfast will be free for registered players who will receive 8 cents off per gallon of fuel purchased at Camden on the Lake.


Card stops include Camden on the Lake, Beavers, Shady Gators, Frankie & Louie’s, Backwater Jacks, Dog Days, Paradise, Papa Chubbys, Larry’s on the Lake, Flying Tortoise and Topsider.

Lake Race 2014: Where to watch the Lake Race
Six days of the 2014 Lake Race will kick off tonight with events running though the weekend. The actual race will be Saturday and Sunday over a 4.5-mile-long racecourse that begins near Bagnell Dam.

On schedule for Tues., June 3, is the lake Race volunteer party, followed by a full week of activities.
More than 40 boats are anticipated for the two-day race and will be craned into place starting about 9 a.m. Saturday, with testing to begin about 10 a.m. Opening ceremonies start at 11:45 a.m. with racing set to begin at noon with live radio and television coverage.
Race headquarters on the Strip will be Beavers at the Dam, while the Country Club Hotel and Spa will be the host hotel where several meetings and testing will take place.
For those who want to view from land, there are a number of spots that will offer great opportunities to watch the boats run the course.

1. Willmore Lodge has an excellent view of the 2014 Lake Race. Call for reservations. Cost is $75 per ticket for both days and includes food, beverages, cash bar and parking for both days. Seating is limited. Bring lawn chairs and sunblock. No coolers allowed.
Willmore Lodge is conveniently located on a scenic overlook Take in some history while you are there. Willmore Lodge is the home of the Bagnell Dam History Museum and Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. It is located at #1 Willmore Lane in Lake Ozark - 1/4 mile northwest of the Bagnell Dam.

2.Bagnell Dam Scenic Overlook
The entrance to Upper Power Plant Road is about one mile north of Bagnell Dam in Business Route 54. Working with the Missouri Department of Conservation, Ameren Missouri has also developed a fish and bird observation area along a walkway leading to the Osage Plant’s main office on the downstream side of Bagnell Dam.

3. Historic Bagnell Dam will be closed to traffic during Lake Race 2014 giving spectators the opportunity to view the races. The race committee is working with officials from Ameren Missouri, the Missouri Department of Transportation, and the City of Lake Ozark to allow spectators onto the dam in order to view the race.

4. Beavers at the Dam Bar and Grill on the Bagnell Dam Strip will serve as headquarters for Lake Race 2014. Beaver’s will be the gathering spot for spectators and racers wanting to enjoy the view and lake atmosphere.

5. Iguana Watersports on the Bagnell Dam Strip will host the vendor village and offer a viewing site. Reserve seating and dock slips as well as public viewing areas will be available.

For those who prefer to watch from the water, there will be viewing along the race course corridor outside the safety zone. Hundreds of boats are expected to line the race course. If planning to view from the water, it’s best to head out early. The course will run from approximately the half-mile marker near Bagnell Dam to the 3 1/2-mile marker. Be sure to have all required safety items on board.

LAKE OZARK, MO. -- The Lake Race 2014 Invitational Powerboat Race at the Lake of the Ozarks will go on despite a threat of rain and storms throughout the weekend.

"We can still race in light rain or even medium rain," race co-chairman Jeff Carroll said Thursday.

"What would come into play that would affect the race would be... high wind, or lightning, anything like that."

Carroll expects around 50 racers to particpate this year, about double the amount of last year's race. He does not expect weather to influence racer turnout.

"There may be a few boats and local guys that may not come out due to weather, but most of the big boys that are coming in from national races will be here," he said.

Among those "big boys," the world champion Miss Geico Race Team.

"We do have some wind, and at the speeds we'll be going, we'll be racing at...170, 180 miles an hour...you're gonna get blown around a little bit so you do have to take that into consideration," Marc Granet, the driver of the Miss Geico Race Boat, said.

Granet says rain shouldn't impact the racers because they're under canopies, but it could influence overall safety.

"The safety crews have to see what's happening on the course, if there's an incident," Granet said.

"So if the rain gets too heavy...if there's a little bit of sprinkles I suspect we won't have any problems...but if the rain gets too heavy then they'll probably call the race and reschedule us for when it clears."

If the weather gets dangerous, race officials will call the race and postpone until the storm passes.

Bagnell Dam on Business 54 in Miller County will be closed Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the Lake Race.

One event scheduled to proceed rain or shine, the Lake Race Chopper Dropper on Monday. The proceeds from the event will go to Lake-area charities.

Run Whatcha Brung, 6 boats

In the Run Whatcha Brung class the finish was unexpected. Geico held a strong lead over everyone except CMS who was barely behind them through the first few laps. Then, on lap 3 I believe, CMS went to make a move to the inside on a corner and cut the course inside the pin. They did not know it so they were still running hard and Geico broke down with a couple laps to go. A lap or so later, Fast Boats broke down and could not finish. So the final finish order unofficially was:

1 - Cat Can Do
2 - Cleveland Construction
3 - Snowy Mountain
4 - Fast Boats
5 - Miss Geico
6 - CMS

Another surprise, kinda like Biloxi. The cats decided not to run the Run Whatcha Brung class because of the 9 lap distance and the number of big cats in the race.

Snowy Mountain had a special Whipplecharged, modified 525 put in the boat for the special event and really ran strong. I have not chatted with Doc and Brian yet after the race so I do not know what speeds they were seeing, bur they were pushing Fast Boats pretty hard for the first couple laps.

Officially Fast Boats crossed the finish line on one engine before Snowy, So reverse their positions.

Fast Boats said they were running 115 with Snowy alongside. Cleveland said they were running 118 and Snowy was alongside. They thought Doc probably hit 120 in the 29....


Doc said he wouldn't tell me the top speed they saw, but it's a fast little boat.....

The Run Whatcha Brung class was a tight finish. Talk about people pushing for the $18,000 check!!

The final difference between the $18,000 check and the second place $10,000 check, 1/2 point!!!! Cat Can Do beat Cleveland Construction over the two days total points by a half point. And they did it after an engine issue so they finished the last 2 laps by pushing the boat through on one engine.....

As throttleman in Simmons Marine for the second race on Sunday I was able to get some close up action shots of the pontoon race.

Here's a couple quick ones, we're getting ready for the long drive home so I don't have time to check my shots much.



The two day winner, number 22, definitely aired his out more than the rest of the boats.
