    Skater Fuel Tanks
    #1
How do you figure out if the fuel tanks on a Skater need to be redone? Is there a way to check them without an invasive procedure?

How much does it cost to redo them?

    Thanks in advance.

If they havent been done they most likely will for safety reasons. Its more a cause of fuel that's available these days as opposed to when it was built. Have it surveyed and inform the tech of the potential of that problem. Invasive is still the best way. I just did about a dozen core holes in a 36 Skater i have in the shop to determine the condition overall. You could have five to eight grand on up in just the tanks pretty easy. If they have leaked into the core it could get pretty ugly. I put a set of aluminum tanks in this one, problem solved.

I had mine done last Winter by Skater, and paid about $6k if I recall. It's a flat rate depending on the model you have, and depending on if it's already destroyed the tank. There was nothing wrong with mine going in, but since I already had it up there, I figured I'd go ahead & get it knocked out while I was having various other stuff done.

You can tell if the boat may need them done by checking the fuel in your fuel filters. If they are getting soft, the fuel will have a white material in it. My boat has always ran race fuel, which does not contain ethanol, or any other additives that could compromise the tank. If you've been running 87-89oct pump gas in the last 5 years or so, you might check them out. As it's been explained to me, 91oct & above doesn't contain ethanol?

    Hope that helps a little.

It does or better way to say it is that it can. My outboards don't like ethanol at all and there aren't any stations that sell non-ethanol fuel in my area.

Are your sure about that Brandon?

Never heard that, we fuel DOI at a specific place without ethanol in the fuel here in Burlington and have never fueled it anywhere else, even doing PR's but I have never heard that ethanol thing on 91+ gas.

i only run non-eth or valve tech (sp?) fuel in my center console w/ 300 verado's, and change the fuel filters every 25 hours. they tell me it's very hard on the 'floats?????'

it wasn't due to ethanol..... however, i will say this ------ i personally saw a 'peanut' come out of one of the filters..... seriously!!!!!

on mine, the tops/cap (or whatever it's called) wasn't sealed well on my tanks, and chris' had a similar problem. not a big deal.. easy fix...
