I know,I know, lots of scams out there,I get a lot,but it's easy to tell and just delete. But I have an offer now that seems legit and don't know how to proceed. Received a couple e-mails from someone with a resort hotel in Uganda with an offer on my 270 Formula.Wants the paperwork in the resort name.Resort checks out,all phone #'s check out,and he has asked several questions that would be unecessary for a scammer, like gear ratio and prop size for the resort's 4000' altitude, can we shrink wrap, add an anchor and fenders. Why would a scammer ask that?He has not asked for any info from me yet. I must be very careful, but I don't want to fluff off a legit deal. How should I proceed?

Tell him if he is serious to send a down payment before u get the boat ready to ship.
Then let him set up shipping, at that point 50% of the money needs to clear your bank and the other 50% before u send the title !!!!!!
Thats what i would do, due to him being across the world.
If he is a business man and serious he will understand !!!!

we will not ship to any overseas country without a bank letter of credit that our bank will except this is payable upon presentation of shipping docs

We do toihs to countries Like the United Kingfdom so you can imagine how we would deal wirg Uganda

The thing about scammer is they also get clever as we get more wary of them its easy to find the right questions for a boat purchase./

Have you called the resort and asked for the purchaser by name?

Thanks,CB,that was my first thought. But why not play it out a little on the off chance he is legit? I haven't given up any info, and will not. I'm not busy now,it is just taking up some time, and I have that.At the first sign of a red flag,I'm out

How about escrow.com? I put in $100K and the fees were less than $900. Sub 1% sounds more than worth it if they do handle things such as this.

Transactions with Buyer outside the United States will be charged an additional $25.00 to cover any intermediary bank fees.

Are international sales or purchases allowed?

Yes. We can offer online escrow services to countries outside the U.S.A. Payment must be provided in United States currency for the transaction.

In addition, please contact the courier to insure you have made allowances for all customs, duties, taxes, and other fees associated with international shipping. In most instances, you can expect delays in delivery due to customs inspections. For more information on international sales/purchases, please contact us

How many boats do you think would be available closer? Europe has a huge supply of boats...The deal doesn't make any sense...but that's just MHO.
Just don't want to see you get burned.

Tell them to escrow ALL the funds with YOUR attorney, nothing partial. Your atty retains title until delivery or include it with the boat. ALWAYS...and I mean ALWAYS control the deal. If they have any problem with that...walk.
Keep in mind that wire's can be reversed, Bank checks can be stopped.
Cash and cash only. Send certified funds, cash funds, and deposit in a different account so the funds cannot be drafted out.

When I bought LongShot, I escrowed the funds for Billy
Elswick...and that was in Floriduh. He wanted me to just cut a check...not a chance. He wasn't happy, but, no attorney,no deal. And that is how it went down.
Billy was a great guy, but, all of those guys were the king of shifty deals.

Of course..all of this is just my opinion...

Also on their site...

"Taxes, customs and import fees are typically the responsibility of the Seller, but the Seller is free to negotiate any additional fees as part of the purchase price."

Contractually, you should not have to pay a dime for anything...nothing.Why would you pay these fees to export to a buyer just because he lives in another country...makes zero sense..
Escrow.com...my azz. Lose control, lose money..it's as easy as that.

The way we deal with russians, french and sofort is they call us we set up a meet and they come down check the boat and pay it and take it away themselves.
I mean 6-800 bucks for a roundflight to check a boat is money well spent.

Why would you pay these fees to export to a buyer just because he lives in another country....

A sale is a sale. If I were in sales and that is what it took to protect my money and make the sale then it would be some thing I would without a doubt consider.

Ebay- they charge sellers fees. Amazon- they charge sellers fees. Take credit cards- you pay sellers fees. Going further- if you have a store- you pay the electric bill, mortgage, floor plan or whatever- all could be considered sellers fees.

Just another fee included in the price of doing business is the way I look at it.

On the other hand- I agree with you; "don't make your problem, my problem" to the buyer. But not sure how well that would work if trying to make a sale..

He is legit, just talked to him. Also talked to Formula, they know him, bought several Formulas, last one a 400SS. We are working out the wire transfer details now. With all the scams out there I was just going to delete the email, but Karen mentioned that it would cost and risk nothing to pursue. Need to always listen to her.:)
