Inflation has hit everywhere but boat racing

I'm a little confused about this past weekends race in Biloxi. I don't want to get flamed but I don't get why there are 10 different classes. Forgetting about the fact that there were only 28 boats. That's understandable in this economy. Is there really a need for 10 classes? That's 2.8 boats per class. As a fan, I would rather see fewer classes with more boats racing against each other.

The most fun I ever had as a host of anything........ TV or live...had to have been the APBA Annual Banquet that Steve and I co-hosted.

There is video somewhere and it was, arguably, the funniest event in the history of Offshore Racing. At various points in the evening I swear we both channeled Abbott and Costello, Martin and Lewis, and the Marx Brothers ....and Steve finally overcame his lifelong shyness.....

T2x

So now we have to be on a mission to find that video.....

There were classes with less than 2.8 boats in them in the good economy...

Check out P1 in Europe and The Emirates.

Tough to consolidate a bunch of A Personalities. But we're the only ones willing to puke the nut to have fun in this great sport.

It is phenomenally marketable but man are egos holding it back here in the US. Sad.

Just for the record I am unaware of anyone in P1 receiving any money at all, however the Dubai based X Cat series which has some Americans racing in, does have quite considerable prize money, and I am told you can break even inside the top 12 at the end of the season. They are running Doug Wright cats and similar with twin 2.5 ROS offshores.

That's what Ned says also. He is knowledable on those guys.

I watch some of the classes in Britain when I can find them. Do you know what they all are? And maybe give us a breakdown on a thread in General Racing so we can review for future possibilities?

Those inline outboards look sweet. Plus they have the RIB's.

This is a RIB that we make - did 91.5mph with a 2.5 offshore on the back - 24' and 975kg.

The P1 racing is split into two classes, the production "Supersports" class has a power to weight ratio of 4.5kg to 1 HP and a speed limit of 85mph. The race boat class is also for monos with a 3.5kg to 1 HP weight limit, no speed limit and canopies, Outerlimits, Fountain, Cigarette and Donzi all have boats racing in the top class.

The Dubai based 6 litre class if for monos or cats, but cats rule - Doug Wrights go well, and any competitive boat from the US should do well over there, but with the cash prizes the competition is hotting up all of the time.

P1 is better for PR and runs in the summer season with a truly International venue series, with the X Cat series running in the winter, little to no PR and prize money it is almost the opposite.

If anyone want s to know more get in touch - I write for a UK magazine about racing as well as building and racing boats myself.

Below the Rib is our latest project for the Marathon class which would compete in the annual Cowes Torquay Cowes race as well as the next round Britain race which will be in 2012 just before the London Olympics.
