Geithner (Obamas Treasury Guy) Failed to Pay Taxes

WASHINGTON – President-elect Barack Obama's choice to run the Treasury Department and lead the economic rescue effort disclosed to senators Tuesday that he failed to pay $34,000 in taxes from 2001 to 2004.

Geithner failed to pay self-employment taxes for money he earned while working for the International Monetary Fund from 2001 to 2003, the transition official said. In 2006, the IRS notified him that he owed $14,847 in self-employment taxes and $2,383 in penalties from 2003 and 2004.

Transition officials discovered last fall that Geithner also had not paid the taxes in 2001 or 2002. He paid $25,970 in taxes and interest for those years several days before Obama announced his nomination, the transition official said.

Geithner also didn't realize a housekeeper he paid in 2004 and 2005 did not have current employment documentation as an immigrant for the final three months she worked for him, the transition official said.

Hmmm...IRS notifies him in 2006 and he doesn't pay up until 2008, "several days before Obama announces his nomination". Just what we need, another crook in the "new" adminstration. An "innocent mistake"? sure Tim. Is this how Barry defines "Change"?

How does one work FOR somebody and be considered "self-employed"?? Would have to be a contractual agreement. But how do you NOT KNOW what you owe if you're self-employed?? I knew exactly how much I owed every quarter and I made DAM sure it was paid on time. Hiring an illegal alien?? Bad form for sure.

This guy is tainted regardless whether he paid his taxes or not. Obama needs to remove his name from nomination.

He should be confirmed though. He paid his taxes with penalties and it turns out his housekeeper let her green card lapse and he didn't know it. So I think the Senate will let him go through.

Not so sure about that. I think he still owes about 24G's. The guy is going to be Sec. of the Treasury, he is an accountant, and he can not file his own taxes properly? I say BS and OB should tell him to take a hike. The guy committed a crime IMO. Do you really think he did not know he owed those taxes, or do you think he was trying to pull one over?
