Exhaust Routing

So I was looking through the classifieds and noticed that the same model fountains (42 with 700s and 6s) came with 2 different exhaust routing. Why is this, wouldn't it be cheaper to just stock one style of exhaust?

The one on the left has standard straigh-back pipes. The one on the right has tails with jogs in them to get them to line up. Details, details...

Alot of the staggered fountains are that way. I personally like symmetry so I would have to go for the one on the right.

I notice that all of them have water pickup's in the hull...those drives do look real high.

Any advantage to having them run straight back? Is it cheaper to do, or does that fact that there is not a bend in them somehow free up the exhaust just a little bit more for the slightest performance gain?

The 6 drive doesn't have a water pickup. They're a quasi-surfacing drive- the pickup would have to be in the skeg

Cheaper isn't really a consideration with a boat like the one's pictured. It's merely a matter of the owner's needs. If you had that boat in a place like Grand Haven Michigan, you'd have real problems with noise tickets.

Fewer radiused or mitred bends in the tailpipes will be less expensive. I do not think the power differences, from one to the other could be accuratley measured.

A buddy of mine has cmi's on a na 540 and the boat is quite at idle. Almost sounds like a runabout

There Is Little If Any Loss Of Power With The CMI Tails , Also You Can Get By With Out Having People Pointing You Out To The Lawman And still Have A Mellow Sound , Besides That They Do Look Bad-azz When You Look At Them On Land :sifone: :reddevil:
