MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WSBT) — Some elite racing is happening this week in Michigan City!

The Great Lakes Grand Prix will take place all this week for fans of speedboat races and onshore entertainment. Racers from across the world are in Michigan City this week for the races.

This event has had a major economic impact in years past. Last year's event alone generated more than $23 million for LaPorte County.

Lots of free community events will take place at Washington Park from Wednesday through Sunday to celebrate the event.

Races will begin Saturday at noon.

The wind stayed from the NNW most of the day, so the forecast was wrong. The water kept building, to where some were splashing up on the pier walkway.

They had the smallest boats last, so it was fun to watch, but my understanding is one guy broke his arm in the rough water, another broke his leg.

Back in the pits they were saying the one guy with the broken leg, by the time he got back to the cranes, couldn't get any help and was pissed as could be. I guess there was also a girl who tripped and fell in the pits and broke her leg. So there were 3 ambulances there at the end of the last race. Anyway, it was a bit rough, but the racers raced!

 
Just looked at the Michigan City beach cam, it is calm right now, and the wind is supposed to be from the E today, so the water close to shore will stay calm if that's true. High temp of 73 at the beach, yesterday was 72, but the lake was 69 yesterday, supposed to be 72 today.
