Family Tree

Anybody every made a detailed one? I think it would be sort of cool to trace back my roots. I know some of them come from Poland and other parts of Europe, but not much more. Whats the deal with those sights that you pay for, is it a one time payment and it shows you your whole family tree? I have spoken to my grandparents but even they only know 2-3 generations back.

Just curious about all this stuff...

There are certain things you may not want to know. And if you look around at the relatives you already know, do you really want to look up any more of them?

My Mom has been really into it for the last several months. She found out some interesting things, but as Chris said, she also found out some things she would have rather not known.

Personally, I find it boring as chit when she talks to me about it. I've got close relatives 10 minutes away that I don't speak to.

My brother did it for my Dad last year and found one thing that we really didn't want to know or need to but we did find a bunch of things that are very cool.
Just be prepaired for it to go eather way.
Ours went way back to 1400 something in Irland and Whales some very cool stuff.

My mom got into this stuff about 15 years ago. I thought it was a joke when she started doing it. Keep in mind this was prior to the internet being readily available.

Since then she has written and published two books on both her side and my dad's side of the family that go back several generations. The amount of hours and research she has in each one blows my mind. I got a copy of each one for a Christmas gift after she finished them. She had a good amount of money in doing this given the printing costs and some of the research she had to pay for. She was able to recover these costs by selling each book to the family members for the price of her investment.

These are pretty cool items that I will have to give to my grandkids many years from now. They show family owned properties, marriages, divorces, births, and documentation from entering the states. The pictures and legal documents printed in the book are pretty cool.

I remember stories of emails she would get from someone that heard she was looking for someone else from years early. This usually opened up a dead end of some sort that she had run into a couple years prior.

A lot of her original research was done in libraries and writing letters.

Having said all that, I'll find out what I can about the websites available today and see if they are worth the $$$.

Hmm interesting. I guess when people ask me where my ancestors are from I would like to give a better answer then "Europe". When you guys say I might find out things I won't want to know, what kind of things are you talking about?

My grandfather is big in to this. I could careless and it is very boring to me.

If I came from money, they didn't leave me nothing but good looks...

I agree.

The information about my heritage in the books I have from my mom is priceless to me. I too thought it was stupid until I got handed a book that traced my family back further than I had ever imagined.

I see zero negative in it.

I'll still do the follow up with my mom for you and find out about her sources over the years.

my mother is into this as well. she has done tons of research on finding out everything from her and my father's family. i now know so many different thinks about my family and name that i am very proud of.

Go for it Josh, i have a hand made cradle here that was made on a ship 200 years ago while "rounding the horn" which is what it was called before the panama canal was built. finding the history part was cool, my great grandfather wrote a book of "recollections". now that my daughter is older and I told her the history of it, she wants the cradle for herself when she moves out, she said it also makes her think of my mom who passed away when she was an infant.
