merc engine identification

Trying to figure out what it is.. boats a 77/78 bertram, twin straight 6's, owner thinks they are 300 ci? they are the original motors with alpha's

292 in-line GM sixes or 300 Fords yes.

If they are165 HP they are250cu in. they are more likely the 200 HP which are292 cu in.
The alphas are not original. originals were either #1 0r #2 drives. Alphas didnt come out until earley 80's (I think)

It is a GM 165hp inline 6cyl 250ci with a Mercruiser R drive. Great motor, great drive will last for a long time...A newer MR or Alpha Gen 1 will bolt right on to the transom assem if they blow up.

A friend has a pair of 165 Merc six cyl motors all rebuilt, the project was abandoned.

I think he'll take $1900 for the pair.

'86 was the first year for ALPHAs. I can't remember exactly but, I think the input spline shaft was an odd length and needed to be swapped if you update the drives. Very easy to do.

Those 165 were popular and dependable. The worked great in twin engines because the could be mounted with close center to centers.. From the transom it almost looked like they were staggered.

Yes Jim, the 165 input shaft is about 3 inches shorter than the Alpha drive.
