28' 1979 Racing Cigarette

Couple reasons come to mind immediately. First is it is one of the most difficult bilges to work in with small blocks. Second all that weight gets the stern squatting to the rub rail.

Tony how many times have you preyed for divine assistance.:biggrinjester:

I repowered one many years ago with 300 tempest SB's. I loved the boat but. it sucked to work on.

I bet it would make a nice P4 boat with BB,and sit down bolsters.

Maybe even convert it to short stagger???!!!:sifone:

Notice there are no pix of the engines. They are shoe horned in there. I would venture to guess the pulleys are in the forward engine bulkhead. It is fun checking timing with mirrors.....Better love it.

Yeah but it would run like hell with 2 x450hp+, and after 80 mph that bottom drives pretty dam good too.

My father wrenched and drove his 27' Sport with two LS-6 motors, pulled off the exhaust to change the plugs, yes, it was a pain the ass, but that was the FUNNEST boat I have ever been on, he had for 19 years, ran 84mph to 86 mph. That Cigarette has a lot of potential. Just cost too much $$$$$ to get there.

Here it is at 81 mph on radar.

Nice pic.....

After the first time I pulled engines out of my 28 I swore if I had to do it again that I was selling the boat.... that was 3 times ago. You have to completley strip the engines to pull them even with SBCs. Ive cracked and pulled them appart at the bellhousing/block, bellhousing/tranny, tranny/tailstock, tailstock/inner transom plate and every combination in between. The end result is always the same.

To be done effeciently its a 4 person job assuming at least one person is a contortionist who weighs less than 150 lbs. One to weasel around while the other two hold said weasel by the ankles, and a grunt to fetch tools and retrieve parts.

A good "Boat Weasel" is a very important thing to have in your toolbox......:sifone:

We need somebody in Sarasota to go get pictures of the engine compartment and talk to the guy.......Tell him he's at least $15,000 too high......

your father was a hero of NJ with that boat and his love of speed! NJ needs more people like him and less flashy financed boat types...

Thank you for the kind words about my father. He wrenched on that boat by himself, never had a mechanical issue. He was very good at making things work, and he would race anybody that gave him a shot. I wish I had 1/100th of his mechanical ability.

There will always be people who can assemble. And then there are the skilled mechanics/wrenches that can assemble, make it live, and have it make horsepower too (I am not that guy), my father was one of those guys.

Thanks for the opitimistic thought.

Stephen

Make my dreams come true and tell me you still have the boat or know where it is!
