Why Make A Wish and boating

As one of the first groups to put on a poker run that includes Make A Wish in our event
I would just like to say that When Bob and I started Smoke On The Water Poker Run in 2001 we wanted to have an event that makes others enjoy offshore boating as much as the participants did so we decided to give rides on the Friday of the event and provide an auction to raise money
We became the largest outside income producer for Make A Wish in Michigan
With the death of two individuals in a boat accident at our event a couple of years ago, and the ensuing law suit, we were forced to discontinue the event

This is the best way to give back via our favorite sport and we should all support any event that includes the children that are less fortunate than us
I am happy to see that many groups have followed our lead and have included a charity in there events and more important are including the children in rides and activities

I am attaching a couple of links for utube that I put up from our event about the kids and rides and also a few pictures

Marc, the (now) Bruce Nicholle Rice Lake Charity Poker run debuted in 1990. Children's Wish was the chosen charity then and still is now.

As i said, "we were ONE of the first", certianly NOT our idea, and certianly NOT the first

It is great to hear of the Rice Lake Poker Runs event I had never heard of it before

do you have any pics to share from the event? Link for the website?

Maybe we need a Make A Wish Boating page :)

Very good stuff. We whole heartedly agree with helping children. When we started in 2003 we decided to donate 100% of our proceeds to a different children’s charity every year. In 2006 we went from donating to charity organizations to donating directly to families. It's been a very fulfilling journey and we plan to keep it up for years to come. Great job everyone.

I thought Poker Runs HAD to be for charity.... :)

I agree, Jammin on the James has donated ALL proceeds to the Shriners for at least 10 years. Last year donation was $15,000 and this years proceeds look to be even more!!!

Well said everyone!! We also have a little bit of Smoke coming to Lake Norman! With Michael Cooper's legacy at the helm of so many hearts, so is his bicycle that has raised $6,900.00 between Smoke on the Water in 2005, which raised $3,400 and now the Platinum Powerboat Club in April, raising $3,500.00. Bob Luellen and Marc Blondin are inspirations for many of us! Especially me, when I walked down the docks at Grand Haven, Mi and watched the magic take place in 2004, I was holding back the tears as my motherly instincts of wanting to hold every child on that dock became overwhelming, to overwhelming to keep from crying. Now Micheal Cooper's bicycle has been donated back to the PPBC and will be up for auction once again in Lake Norman in 2 weeks. Although this brave little boy lost his fight for life when he was only 9 and before he could ride this little bmx bike, he has shared it with many. The PPBC has granted 6 terminally ill children their wishes in only 2 events. Smoke on the Water's legacy returns with Bob Luellen at Lake Norman on July 31st at Midtown Sundries! Join Bob and some of Michael's friends at Lake Norman as we open our hearts and share our passion of powerboating, by Granting Wishes, 1 Event at a time! http://www.platinumpowerboatclub.com/heart/html Joy

Marc,

I will be doing my part tomorrow at SHORE DREAMS FOR KIDS

It was mighty impressive to see this framed image I donated to the auction sell for $500.

A short time ago I got a call to produce and image for the East Coast Boat Racing Club of NJ.

500 cards will be printed in time for handing out to the kids in the morning autographed by the East Coast Boat Racers who can attend... :)

It is fantastic to see so much support come together around the events for these kids!
