Inflation has hit everywhere but boat racing

Its a shame that it is this way. My dad took me to a race when I was a kid in Michigan City Indiana on lake michigan. I still remember it got Reggies autograph. Haven't been in the immediate area since. They are having a race this summer in Michigan City and I am going to take my 3 year old son to see it who know the next chance he will have to see something so cool in our area. Hopefully its doesn't take another 20 plus years from them to come back!

Ever wonder why boat racing is at best a second level motorsport and, at worst, an amatuerish parade? Look at the numbers.

In 37 years we have gone absolutely no where with prize money.......

In fact I received appearance money, paid by the mile to race tunnel boats in Canada in the mid 70's. Now you haul a million dollar cat around with a cast of thousands on your own nickle........

Read it and weep.

Maybe Obama and Geithner can help......

Who paid you the appearance money? Mercury? Maybe they could do it the same now?

Nope...the town race committees paid...We filled hotels and restaurants...not just with racers but the spectators came from far and wide... (of course we actually raced against multiple other boats in the same class).

As far as Mercury having to "pay" you...why? They are experiencing the same hard times as everyone else, as you will no doubt hear in the next few days.

Racers are "entitled" to money, if they provide a product or "show" that is worth watching, creates (real ........not friends and relatives) fan appeal, and displays close competition and skill levels. That is not the case at present.

I believe that the two Michigan races said they had the best attendance ever this year for the town.

You can make more money fishing a boat! That should tell you something.

Speaking of racing a boat I always found if kind of interesting that there is absolutly ZERO license you need to race. You just go out and buy a boat and enter a race....no experience necessary?!?!?! WOW! Heck I even raced, won a few too...interesting!

To race with SCCA, NASA, NASCAR, and even Porsche Club events you need training and need to be approved biwht a license.

This is one among many reasons boat racing is what it is.

I gotta agree with Jimmy here.....

As I've stated before, I think offshore racing can be successful if/when it's run like a business.

I know someone that tried this...oh not too long ago....had a real good thing started, major sponsors, major TV, better prize money, real classes and with real rules that were enforced.... and was run out.

, major TV, better prize money, real classes and with real rules that were enforced.... I've seen this the past 2 years:boxing_smiley:

If you ever want to know where your boat racers went to...check out a NASA, SCCA or a Porsche Club race. Porsche Club this year had over 250 race cars at the Sebring event.
