Sign of the times? I sold my place and they are going to bulldoze it. Good for them. All the storage customers used to b!tch about rates etc so much it didnt remain practical for it to stay a marina. Maybe people should think twice about rates when all the marinas are gone

What do you mean when you say rates? How much are we talking????

Regretedly I'm not keeping my boat at the marina this year because the $5K it costs for 6 months of use I'd rather use for fuel with this market being the way it is.

Do marina's make profit on storage or service?

$30 bucks a day to park your boat in a slip , Hmmmmm. Pretty good money in my opinion. Add in that labor that the shop is charging 130 an hour for , there has to be some decent profit if your marina is full.

Add in insurance (remember fiberglass, sparks, fuel and racks = big fire), liablility when drunk boater smashes into dock/ slip and falls and that $130 an hour still has to pay for the mechanic/shop foreman/secretary and all the overhead that comes with a shop.

It isn't a ticket to riches unless you own the building outright in a high demand area. There is a reason when everyone sells out for a condo project....

If you're year round (most are), add in winter storage at another $2500 multiplied by 300+ boats and you're talking $2.2M year revenue in storage alone. Storage is your re-occuring revenue and what pays the bills, everything else is probably profit (service). It's just a guess but I think I might be close..

At the end of the day I don't think it's a goldmine but it's not a wash either.

Marina isn't responsible for paying insurance for a fire unless it was caused by the marina. The vessels insurance and the person pays for the damage and that's they way it works in Jersey... Had some experience seeing this first hand (3 times)..

What business doesn't have headaches?

It really sucks to see these marina's fail but I respectfully dissagree that it's the customers fault if a marina goes under, especially in tough times...

at are marina you have to have your owe insurance ! marina prices are so high people are selling . gas price ,at the marina is a joke most boaters that can pull there boats out and go to the gas stationthis guy ask me is $600 i paid to have a starter put in. price on starter$89 ,its no wonder theres a lot of emptty slips ! $2500 for storage is a joke ! i rember years ago you paid for a slip for the summer ,you got free storage. the marina got a lot of business! tune up paint bottom of the boats ,oil change and now boaters are selling or the bank is taking them

Where are you getting a marine starter for 89 bucks. Closer to 200.00. 600.00 might be high but I don't know how hard it was to get to. If you guys all think marinas are such great money makers, you should all buy one. There's enough of them for sale now. Most people that buy marinas are shocked at the expenses they incur trying to keep it profitable. Try getting permits to dredge, add docks or maybe replace them after a storm. The insurance is unbelievable, and if you are in an area where storms do alot of damage you might not find insurance. Car dealerships have always been more profitable than marinas.

I hope my (former) marina falls flat on its face this year. They basically sold their souls to the casino that inhabits the same breakwalls...closed the marina completely and kicked us out two years ago, tore down our yacht club and laundry/restroom facilities and replaced them with TRAILERS last year, our parking lot has been cut in half to make bigger and better parking facilities for the casino, basically handed over a list of out-of-state boaters to the Indiana DNR which promptly assessed a $200+ excise tax on us, AND then raised prices for the upcoming season. As soon as my hoist is out of there, I'm sending a big "kissmyass" letter their way...with the economy going flat, I'm sure there will be a LOT of people following me. All I might be using them for this year is the launch ramp....where they charge every boat $15...unless it happens to be on a triple axle trailer...then its $30. Stupid f'rs.
