Would having one outboard with 25 more HP than the other be a really bad idea ?

03-23-2010 09:47 AMYeah- a 50 and a 25 would matter. At 200 and a 225- never notice.

Weight of each?
Both same stroke (2 or 4 stroke)?
What % is the higher HP than the lower HP motor? Like a 25HP and a 50HP, big difference. Verado 275 and a Verado 300, not much difference.

03-23-2010 10:36 AMMost of the bigger outboards from merc, are exactly the same motor with different ECU's(not sure about the opti's), For example a 225EFI, and a 250EFI are the same motor, if you want 2 225's, just trade your 250 ECU for a 225, if you want 2 250's, just get a 250 ECU and a 4 hole intake(some 225's already have the 4 hole).

My port engine is a 1993 Merc 200, I blew up the powerhead on the starboard. they want 4 K for a re-manufactured Powerhead or 2300 for a used unknown powerhead, I can buy a 2001 225 EFI for 3 K. I know the power at the prop is pretty close to 225 on the newer engine, the older still running is probably closer to 175.....

03-23-2010 03:06 PMGet the 225, learn to throttle it differentially, and then when the other one blows you get another one. More, power, faster.

03-23-2010 04:33 PMOK,
That is a different story, is your 200 a 2.5 liter? If so, you do not want to mix them, the 3 liter is like a big block, it is a torque monster compared to the 2.5. The 2.5 will rev, but doesnt have the bottom end of a 3 liter. What you can do is get 2 used 225's, and sell the running 200 complete, and the blown one for parts, and make MOST of your money back, that is what I did with my 2.4 when I switched to 3 liters. Like I said above, it is also VERY easy to convert a 225EFI to a 250EFI
