instantly cuts out ( I think) I couldn't hear over the other outboard, just saw the tach zero out, and lost power steering

Check to see if there is a Cuban wrapped around the propeller.

Is it an EFI? Does the volt meter move when it dies. Is the gearcase locked up?
If it is not an EFI it does not need voltage to run. The key will ground switch box thru Black/yellow wire to kill motor. The spec is 750 max rpm in gear at idle. Is it idling around 8 or 900 in neutral?

Many of the newer motors have a switch mounted on the shift slide bar where cable attaches to motor to interrupt the engine to aid shifting. You can unplug it while you trouble shoot.

the tach is old and hard to read below 2000 rpms, it is a carb motor. (1993)

Usually when it dies when you shift means the idle circuit is not working and likely clogged.
Very often the idle is turned up so that it will run on the main circuit. If that is the case it will die when you shift it. When did it last work properly?
Is fuel puddling in the front of the carbs while it runs?

You should not see fuel puddling in the carb. If you squeeze the bulb while its not running does fuel come out and puddle? It should get get hard and not show fuel. If you can see fuel puddling the floats are dirty or stuck open. If this is the case it will also puddle so you can see it while its running. You should not be able to see fuel.

06-10-2009 05:28 PMJimmy's on it! I concur!
I had numerous customers who would have the same problem every spring and it was usually this same problem. pump bulb and check for fuel. If there's fuel I would dissasemble carb, soak it overnight, next day assemble and whallah runs like a champ!

Carb kits are somewhere around 10 bucks per at Wholesale Marine. Took maybe 2 hours to remove, rebuild, and reinstall. Motor runs great now.

If it ran right 3 months ago I can of brake clean and a compressor is all you need.
