Watched a little of the B/J auction and they said Merc built the engines and shipped them to GM for the first ZR1's, true?

Remember how the ZR1 engines were "hand assembled?" That assembly was done by the Merc folks. Not sure if any of the parts were actually machined at/by Merc, but most of the stuff was shipped in, put together, shipped out.

Merc has done some machine work for a lot of applications. The guy from Chicago that died last year at work posted that he found a Merc stamp on some internal engine parts off his Harley.....

I thought the conventional wisdom was that GM picked Merc to do the ZR-1 engines because of the aluminum casting experience that Merc had from (of all things) the 470-series in-line 4-cylinder engines from the mid 70's! If I remember correctly, it was a Lotus-designed engine as well.

MMark you took it wrong........I think he had more posts on here than I did. I just referenced what I could remember about the post. He was from Chicago and died at work and found Merc stampings inside his bike......those were the two details I could recall.

Now if I referenced the guy from Maryland that likes chinaman rubdowns, center consoles, interior decorating, bling jewelry.........most would recall that description as you!

    Happy Easter Mark!

Actually, I think Lotus was involved in the design of the ZR-1 engine (I could be wrong about that, but it seems to be in my memory bank somewhere. Then again, I'm getting old!).

I certainly wasn't implying that Lotus had anything to do with those lousy old 4-bangers!

Lotus did most of the design work. Merc was chosen because of their manufacturing capabilities. Both of these facts did not sit well with GM's powertrain divisions. The ZR-1 engine pushed internal development at GM for future designs.
