LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — A 40-foot v-hull race boat spun out and flipped near the Shootout racecourse on Sunday.
Driver Travis Reed and throttleman Andy Copeland were testing Two Cocks Racing before making a pass at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout when something went awry. The 1998 Skater spun out and flipped doing 100+ mph. Copeland made it out of the vessel quickly, but Reed ended up trapped under the canopy six feet deep as the boat began to sink, narrowly escaping with approximately 20 seconds to spare, according to witnesses close to the race team.
After recovering the vessel and upon a more thorough review, the race team believes a mechanical failure may have been the catalyst for the mishap.
The Oklahoma driver and throttleman both escaped injury in the incident and look forward to the next race.
