Anyway, as I was saying, the lineup for SVL in this St Clair Classic was a strong one. The last time we had six or seven boats here was a memorable race as I'm sure many of you recall.

In this race, right off the start, it looked to be a run-away for Pirate racing. The start was excellent as you can see from the first pic. A nice straight line with everyone in their lane. So, the green flag dropped, and off they went. Pirate to the front, Typhoon a very close second, Octane running third. Everyone appeared to hold their lanes completely through the first turn as the rules required, so it looked as if no penalties, arguments, protests, or DQ's would be happening this year. (Now another class was not quite the same way, more later)

So, at the end of the first lap, approaching the start-finish, it was Pirate, Typhoon, Octane, and all the rest buried in their spray (Absolutely Not there in the middle), but not a single boat out of it.

After 4 of the 10 laps, my guess was that Pirate would be the winner, they had opened up a lead of almost 1/4 of a straight on Octane and Typhoon battling for second. It appeared as if Typhoon had the speed, Octane had the corners, but man were Smitty and Louie having a ride in Typhoon. If I put up every pic I have of them catching serious air, they'd need their own thread.....

After about 6 laps. It was looking as if Tyler and Jim had figured the boat out pretty well, and they were giving Typhoon some strong competition....

The battle for fifth was also hot. It appeared as if JD Byrider (Absolutely Not) had really good speed down the straights, but had not figured out the odd cornering with the current changes. Wild Ride was a wild ride, running strong but loose..

TUGIT, in a solid fourth but wanting to close up on the second place battle, was running loose also to try and close the gap. After they said they did not have enough prop so were battling the rev limiter the entire race - upstream and downstream.

One of the interesting things in SVL when chatting with teams over the years, the thought seems to be that in a flat water race, rivers and lakes, whoever gets the first turn lead ends up as the winner. Well, that may be the opinion, but it is certainly not always true. In this particular race, it was absolutely not true.

Pirate led for most of the race, Typhoon second, Octane third. Half way throught the race, I figured that was the finishing places. At lap 6, I thought maybe Octane had a chance to overtake Typhoon. They appeared to be almost as fast down the straights, but seemed to be quite a bit faster through the corners. When they took the inside away for a corner, they pulled out and Typhoon could not make up the difference they were gaining in the corners through the straights. No one can say that Smitty and Louie were not trying though. They were on the edge so many times I lost track.

With about two laps to go, Octane had really closed the gap on Pirate. Then, just after the south turn, they passed on the outside. After the race, chatting with Dave and Travis, they were shocked. They had been watching Typhoon in second place and had completely lost track of the fact that Octane had passed them. SO, on cruise because of their lead over Typhoon of about a full turn, they were shocked.....

Octane made it past, Pirate started the chase, they were closing pretty strong when they hit a combination hole/quartering wake in the front stretch. After they said they were lucky. The boat did a mini stuff at about 45 degrees and they about gave Martha a coronary. But, they came out of it and finished second, but had given up way too much ground during that jaunt to be able to make up the entire distance and challenge again.

Your finishing order, a great race. I hope we have at least 6 SVL's in every race for the balance of the season.

SUPER VEE LITE

1 - 411 Octane
2 - 21 Pirate Racing
3 - 29 Typhoon
4 - 51 Wild Ride
5 - 66 Tug It
6 - 107 Absolutely Not

Congrats to Jim and Tyler. Octanes first win in Simmons Racing stable.
