The U.S. Coast Guard on Friday announced a high seas drug bust that resulted in the seizure of more than 1,400 pounds of cocaine and a go-fast boat along with the arrests of two suspected drug smugglers.
The cocaine, packed in 22 bales, has a wholesale value of $16.5 million, the agency said.
According to the Coast Guard, a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol aircraft spotted a 30-foot go-fast boat that was adrift and carrying suspected contraband about 55 miles off the southern coast of Puerto Rico on Monday night.
The seizure was made Tuesday morning after the Coast Guard Cutter Reef Shark and two other vessels from the Caribbean Border Interagency Group arrived at the scene where the 30-foot boat was found to have run out of fuel.
The two men aboard the go-fast boat were taken into federal custody. The cocaine was transferred to federal agents at the Coast Guard base in San Juan.
