H20 Full Throttle Pulls the Plug for 2010

That mag's quality far surpassed anything I've seen in the category. Economy finally took it's toll on what really is a magazine with a very specialized audience. Hope Ned's other mag is doing OK. I think it was a helicopter mag?

He was very generous with free issues for members of this and other boards. It may have taken a while to receive them in the US, but I eventually got mine. I think I'll be keeping them.

Too bad......

Sorry to hear this. To Ned and all his staff, THANK YOU for producing one of the best mags for powerboating worldwide. Your generousity with the free subscriptions was very much appreciated!! I wish ya'll the best!!:cheers2:

I had a free subscription too and will keep them. Sorry to see it end. :(

I just read the post over on OSO, and it's not dead yet. Says it's on hiatus for this year. Subscriptions will pick up again when they decide to publish it again. Hopefully that day will come.

Point of clarification: My story did not say the magazine was dead, just done publishing for 2010. It's even in the headline.

Makes you wonder just how good things really are at those boat companies who were touting an economic come back at the Miami Show....?

Chatted briefly with Ned yesterday, He hope's to be able to bring back the magazine, From a photographic standpoint it is a top noitch magazine, Ned has started a new Magazine that covers Auto Racing, He says it will be top notch as well.
The website will remain up and running, and will hopefully get some great contributions to it!

I think it has more to do with WHERE they're spending their money.

Maybe when things are booming advertisers are less sensitive about tossing ads here and there. But in reality, what kind of REAL circulation and audience did H2O truly have?

My local Borders gets 4 copies of Powerboat a month. I haven't seen a PRA, Performance Boats or any other mag on the newstands in years. So where does a new startup magazine find its audience? They attempted to pick up an audience with some guerilla marketing things like free subs to our members. But that doesn't get you the readership of a Powerboat.

Not to diminish the quality of the publication or Ned's effort, but unless you have some serious $$ to invest to attract and retain readership, you're going to have a tough time keeping advertisers. They're paying for viewership and results. Bootstrapping and guerilla marketing has a sliver of a chance in a strong market. In a down market, not so much.

Which boat companies touted economic comeback, Rich?

If you're referring to my story about Donzi, http://www.boats.com/boat-content/2010/02/donzi-on-the-rebound-fingers-crossed/, that story essentially quoted Donzi's Craig Barrie saying he was "encouraged" that he came away from show with five orders. Nothing more, nothing less, but at least some marginally good news in a sea of what has been mostly bad.

Matt.....I wasn't necessarily referring to your blogs or comments.

There were a few posts from not only Miami but other regional shows stating that both dealers and manufacturers were optimistic and surprised by the orders..... Cigarette also was very open about international orders.

I still don't see a recreational item rebound until unemployment numbers drop significantly...and retail lending starts up agressively. Neither circumstance is on the horizon IMHO. However rest assured that our government is working diligently to address the more "important" issues.

Agreed on all counts, as usual. Didn't mean to come across as defensive, though my tone sounded like it. I just wondered who was out there saying all is well.
