Lake of the Ozarks Shootout Committee Overturns American Ethanol Disqualification

If you're above the maximum allowed start speed limit, how can it be overturned?

Day 1 Update: American Ethanol DQ Overturned In 217 MPH Run

LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. — American Ethanol blew past its top speed from last year's Shootout, with a 217 mph run. But the run—the boat's only run for the day—got a "black flag," meaning it was disqualified, since the boat was already over 40 mph when it crossed the starting line.

Last night, the Shootout Committee overturned the disqualification, making the fastest run of the day count, and blowing away an impressive 192 mph put up by a 36-foot Skater driven by Garth Tagge.

Here is a video showing the start. You can see the speed monitor official waving the yellow flag to tell the drivers they are exceeding the 40MPH maximum speed limit. However, the starter at the front of the start boat waves the green instead of the black, while the yellow flag for exceeding the limit is still up. Miscommunication I guess between the two start officials. Nothing official from the event yet that I have been able to find out, but I have not given up.

Then, from talking with people, those in the boat hit it hard because they saw the green and not the black. After they were notified that they had been DQ'd for exceeding the maximum allowed start speed, they protested because they were given the green flag signaling a fair start. From what I have gathered, this was important because they ran full out, and had burnt a piston in one of the boats four engines. They may not have been able to return because of the issue. If this run did not stand, someone else may have been top-gun if they could not get the boat fixed.

The run was reinstated later that evening after meetings with all officials involved watching videos of the start to see if they had been given the green instead of the black. So, they did not have to thrash on the boat to try and make another run, and did not get the boat fixed and attempt another run either day.

Seems like just one more reason to get rid of the running start anyway. First it was from a dead stop, then it was a 20 mph start, then it was a 40 mph start, now it is a green flag start no matter what the speed is?

A dead stop start is easy to monitor and will bring the speeds back down to increase the safety for all. Maybe add 100 yards or something.

I think it's pretty clear one specific boat was going to be Top Gun one way or another.
 
I don't know that I'd go that far. But to me, the DQ should not have been overturned based on what I've been able to find out from those there.

I do feel bad that they hurt a motor running hard on a pass that was DQ'd because of a flag malfunction, but chit happens.
 
I feel bad for everyone who runs ethanol and experiences massive engine problems. Especially the weekend boater without unlimited resources.
 
The numbers being passed around about the start is that they entered the box, (40 MPH Maximum allowed), at 62, the yellow flag was furiously waving for going to fast, they had it slowed to 48 MPH by the end of the start box, so they were disqualified.

Still digging to find out the accuracy of those numbers.

I'm still not getting it. If the boat was going too fast for the start, just because the Black Flag wasn't seen doesn't mean the boat still wasn't going too fast.

I've never seen a red flag at the drags overruled because the driver didn't see it?
 
I am surprised you are having so much trouble with this. American Ethanol was going to win. They are going to win next year too.
And if Flight Club and Sterling are going to have a run at beating American Ethanol, they will have to do it on Lake St. Clair.

This is life. Nobody beats the union candidate in the rust belt. Nobody beats Ethanol in the corn belt. Is what it is.
