I have a little different perspective on health care. I was just diagnosed last Thursday of having MS. I have no health insurance, due to the economy being in the chitter. I don't think that should be a death sentence by any means.
Anyone who thinks it should be, ought to walk a mile in my shoes.

I'm not saying that we should actively round them up and kill them. I am saying that they should not get "free" health care. They can either pay for their health care with their own money, or die!

The problem is.... the ones who ate their way to obesity are just part of the problem. I hate the idea of nationalized healthcare. I hate the idea of paying for people who could have prevented the problem.
But... I have friends on this board who are "fat" and I am not comfortable making broad sweeping generalizations that sweep my friends into the group. Heck, some obese people are really productive and pay their own way.

But, that is what the Government should be working on. Guys like Cuda who are productive and hit catastrophic circumstances should get assistance, and get it immediately when a team of Dr's say that's what he needs. Not bypassed by the system because he lives in the wrong county.....
A crack-head in emergency for the third time to have life-saving specialized care due to a drug overdose????? I honestly don't think so. Sounds callous, but you have to draw a line somewhere.
I really think quality of care should be based on personal health choices. It should no way be all inclusive. It's not a God given, or Constitution given, right to have heart transplants, lung transplants, dialysis, specialized medicines that cost thousands every month, etc. In Canada, from what I've read, the acceptable death rate for patients waiting to receive heart bypass surgery is 80%. The one thing that would happen here with nationalized health care is a similar set of circumstances, and no one for attorneys to sue.

How about smokers? How about drinkers? I'm sure there's a few of them on this board right? How about irresponsible driving? How about working in tough conditions that are more likely to cause injury? How about irresponsible boat driving? How about daredevil sports? Mountain climbing accidents?
Where do you draw the line regarding irresponsible behavior? And more importantly WHO draws that line? Is insurance only for those that live perfect lives? Who determines what a perfect life is and is there such a thing?

So you'll let grandma die if she needs a heart transplant cuz her husband passed away and she has no way of paying health care?
You'll let a 5 year old die cuz her dopey parents dont have jobs that afford health care patients.?
What you guys are really talkin about is not wanting to pay for the cheaters and the waste.
And cheaters and waste show up in every facit of life and we pay for it every day.
Its a case of priorities and I know enough about all of you that you personally wouldnt choose to not have a safety net to protect your country's children when there is so much waste elsewhere including a couple of wars , the cleanup of those wars, bailing out 3 different industries full of corruption and waste and last and least, paying for security at Michael Jacksons funeral.
The average cost per capita to deliver health care in France,England ,Sweden and Canada is approx. 3750.00. In the USA it is 6400.00.
Thats what has to be investigated, not who to kick to the ditch.

I agree. And while you are on the How About??....How about the thousands and thousands of soldiers that come back so completely traumatized both physically and mentally that they have health issues out their ying yang for the rest of their lives.

you could start with tort reform, and it would fix this. Dr.'s wouldn't have to pay such outrageous insurance rates.... what people don't get it anything in business always, always gets passed on to the consumer at some point.

That's why the gov't should hire me and pay me a boatload of money to decide on a case by case basis which productive citizens should receive healthcare and which drains on society should not.
It seems to me that personal responsibility comes into play here....everyone is complaining about what the gov't is doing, no one seems to point out that it is not the gov't stuffing pork grinds down that fat guys throat while sitting on the couch!!
Yes, but part of the savings in Soc medicine come from poor health care and HUGE waits for care in many cases. My Great Aunt was turned away three times for eye surgery in Montreal and when she made it in the fourth time they said "Sorry, too far along, can't operate" Voila, no big expense there. Then she breaks her hip in a fall, rushed to the Emerg Room, Doc looks her over and says "Just bruised, rest up, here's some Tylenol" 36 hours later she's in a coma from blood loss because of the break, damn near lost her then too. I recently ruptured my Distal Bicep tendon, I was X-rayed and MRI'ed the next day, diagnosed and operated on in the space of ten days. This is very important because the tendon will shrink requiring a graft if the surgery is more than 2 weeks out. There is a forum for this injury (whoda thought!) and we have members from Canada and the UK that are waiting as much as 90 days for an Xray or MRI, then another 90 for surgery. And of course if a graft has to be done the cost of the surgery goes almost triple and the repair is approximately 20% more likely to fail or have complications. So there may be savings, but at what cost? If we go to a Soc system of health care like our more enlightened neighbors and allies, where will the rest of the world go for quality health care then?
