08-20-2009 04:00 PM"Not only did the team achieve superior performance while adding a catalyst, they maintained fuel efficiency and improved serviceability without adding cost," said Derric Drake, MerCruiser's program manager on the project, in a statement.

They mean catalytic converter, required now in CA,everywhere I think next year.Adds quite a bit to the cost of current engines, not sure about the new ones.BTW,sorry for the typo in the title, don't know how to edit title,I meant big,not bib

08-20-2009 04:17 PMI fixed it.
I thought that's what they were getting at. I guess we could only hold out so long...
I can't wait for the whole plethora of problems to arise from their use.

Right now a "CA Compliant" engine has a dealer cost upcharge of $1000-$2000.If they only build it that way in the future I guess they can hide the upcharge in the base price.

Where have you guys been......there have beena number of articles about this over the last couple years. Apparently the only way to meet California's emissions restrictions is a catalyst.
Here's one on many articles I found explaining how the marine catalyst works:

What I found surprising on that page was the Brunswick line "Maxum" is being discontinued.
