I sent all this crap out to be rebuilt over a year ago and I get them back and tape off the wire leads before fogging them with paint. The red, black, and purple leads are self expanetory.

Problem: There is a 10ga.ish Orangeish maybe yellow wire in the harness that should terminate to the alternator, I think it goes to the 2 O clock stud, as it has a loose locking nut, exciter as per merc manual?.....This thing is a little before my time....... THoughts??

Yes, the 1/4 stud gets the orange wire. it should be the biggest stud there.
