Good call on the classic muscle, FF2. My brother's first car was a red on black 1969 Camaro RS. That car turned heads and helped him land more azz than I ever thought possible. Have fun in your search!

You will have more fun with a Caddy than trying to restore/mod a Firebird. You won't get all the Smokey and the Bandit jokes either.
Caddys can also be found in better shape than most unrestored hot rods.

My neighbor inherited one from his grandpa and the car was tons of fun. The only catch was in FL the rust caught up with the body in less than 5 years. He intended to put the motor in a 90's pickup but let the car die in a boneyard......
Cool, but Ill stick with the Bird.

My first car was a '77 Firebird w/301. It was a great car and it got azz like crazy.

Of course it was almost new then.

My dad bought an 81 Turbo T/A off the showroom floor when I was 7 years old and HUGE Smokey and the Bandit fan. I was in absolute HEAVEN in that car...it had these kickass orange lights on the back of the hood scoop that would light up when the turbo kicked in...freakin AWESOME. My dad kept it until 87 when he bought a Vette, then sold it to some friends our ours. Both of their sons drove it, but took really good care of it...and my parents surprized me and bought it back to give it to me for my 21st birthday. In 1995, the car only had 70,000 on it, and no rust at all. I drove it for a year, but I was racing mountain bikes fairly seriously, and it was really tough to fit one in the back seat...so I sold it. And yes, I'm kicking myself. You rarely see a nice one nowadays...they were rustbuckets for the most part (though I distinctly remember the "Rusty Jones" decal in the window of mine, maybe that's why it held up so well?). Good luck with your search...like someone else said...I think those are about to really increase in value...I've been KINDA thinking about selling my Vette and trying to get a 455HO.

My first car was a 1978 TA that a guy built for his son who ended up getting into some kind of trouble and going to prison. The old man sold it to me for cheap. It had a built up 455 in it. Black with the gold bird.

You may already know, but they called the Pontiac 400 "T/A 6.6" but you could also get the L72 and that was called "6.6 Liter" but still a pontiac engine.

The olds 403 also was called "6.6 Liter"

They couldn't have made that any more complicated.

I think the definite year, where it is easy to tell, is 1978 because they dropped the base L72. 1977 though was all screwed up.

I actually didnt know that. So in 1977 a 6.6 may very possibly be a pontiac 400?

Double check because I'am sure about 6.6 thing. But Pontiac motors had 4 bolt valve covers (kinda looks like small bock chevy but bigger and more rounded at ends) Olds motors I think were 6 bolt valve covers more of a angle at ends. This only goes for engines before GM started using the 5.7 in chevy small in Pontiac.
