Surprised it took this long to make the news, but it does explain part of the why.

Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix moves to mid-September
Story by ABC7 Staff

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - The 40th Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix, presented by Powerboat P1 and sponsored by Visit Sarasota County, has moved from traditionally being held over the July 4th Holiday to September 13 to 15.

Several reasons prompting the move included driving more business to local retailers, hotels, and restaurants during the off-season.

The announcement says the move will help alleviate the limited City and County resources when held over the busy July 4th Holiday weekend, while at the same time, posing a better time of year by moving away from the peak bird and turtle nesting season on our area beaches.

The weekend festivities will begin on Friday, September 13, with a Pit Party in the Van Wezel parking lot featuring live music, food, and plenty of powerboats that will be on display for the general public to enjoy. Then on Saturday and Sunday (September 14-15) race fans will be able to enjoy powerboat races off Lido Beach.

New to the event this year is an elevated VIP Viewing experience on Lido Beach at the Start/Finish Line and the Class 1 Experience. This year’s VIP viewing experience offers upgraded amenities for guests, a LIVE stream of all the racing action, expanded seating options, and enhanced dining and beverage selections with a cashless experience making purchases on the beach a breeze. Corporate hospitality tents will also be available.

The Class 1 Experience will provide race fans with a true behind-the-scenes tour of the biggest and fastest powerboats on the water. It includes private access to parties, events, private tours, team meet & greet opportunities, and ultra-premium race viewing on both race days.

Last year, the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix generated an estimated $5 million in economic impact.

Pete Harvey, Director of Sports for Visit Sarasota County, stated “We are excited to welcome the Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix back on their new September dates. The Grand Prix draws enthusiastic crowds, capturing the attention of visitors and residents alike. It attracts a diverse range of attendees, which generates a sizeable surge in tourism and spending.”

Powerboat P1′s 2024 season receives both national and international television coverage, including Bally Sports regional sports networks. The benefiting charity from this year’s event is the P1 Marine Foundation.

Upcoming race sites include Cocoa Beach (May 16-19), Lake of the Ozarks, MO (May 29-June1), Sheboygan, WI (August 9-11), Sarasota, FL (Sept. 13-15), and St. Petersburg, FL (Oct. 18-20).
