This is my first post on SOS...and no this does not suck, good job to the founders.
This Sucks
Had to work on a list today with criteria on the reduction in staff for the facility. This will be almost a 20% reduction (27 people), it includes single mom's and people that I have worked with for the past 6 years. I really hope the economy takes a turn in the right direction. Just working out the plan on how we are going to orchestrate the communication without causing a panic.
This Sucks...and very sad.

I guess you have to look at that the people on the list are on "counseling" (as corporate calls it) for attendance and/or performance. Maybe it's time to make people realize that you really have to work, none the less it impacts peoples lives.

Im working on a bit of a troubled employee myself.
We hired a new guy a few months back as a favor to another employee ( a soon to be father in law). This guy now in his late 20s was down on his luck and has a criminal background as a minor and needs work bad because his gf/fiance is pregnant. The GF happens to be the daughter of a longtime employee of mine. The kid is a hard worker but just isnt cut out for this line of work and a lot of his storries dont add up. He was scheduled for a drug test some time ago and came to me with tears in his eyes and told me he couldnt pass one. I gave him 30 days to get clean and take a test, that date was coming up this week. Over the weekend he and his g/f gave birth to a stillborn child.........This is gonna suck!

Tony,
Yeah it is rough you get involved with all the lives of the employees. It's gonna be hard for you. But what do you do??? I guess sometimes you are forced to make choices that impact your life also, like making the right decisions to make sure your employment is secure. Sucks.Too many margaritas!!!

JJ-P was taking this all a bit rough last night. It's hard, knowing how this is going to affect these peoples lives.
I'm a little more cold hearted than her. But, I spent the summer managing ~25 people in one department. The ones that didn't want to follow the rules and work, well, they didn't like me. So, they began quiting one after another.
The ones that didn't want to work, but needed the job (paycheck) either called in sick (ehem, cough...) or scheduled vacation times that I HAD to approve because of policy. HR didn't really step in to replace the people that quit, because we kind of saw this coming. This meant I was working all the hours to cover people that didn't show to make sure we still met production goals.
My take on it is that they caused it themselves. If they didn't want to show for work in the first place, they don't need to show at all.
I've fortunately moved into a different position in the Co. I couldn't keep going like that much longer.
But, it also makes me wonder just how long my own job is safe."Keep the bottle on the bar Ira, I won't be long".
