WEST MILFORD — The Greenwood Lake Power Boat Association is hosting the Greenwood Lake Power Boat Races next weekend, June 6 and 7, at Browns Point Park.

Jay Hardy, president of the Greenwood Lake Power Boat Association, said his group is thrilled to host the event again this year, which, in addition to providing some good family fun, is giving back to the West Milford community: the Greenwood Forest Fire Department (Company 3) is the recipient of a donation from the association for their help with traffic and crowd control.

The Greenwood Lake Power Boat Association hosted powerboat races on the lake from 1984 to 1999, according to Hardy, that were well attended and successful. In 2000, the club ran out of money. With the assist from the Greenwood Forest Fire Company last year, the group put it together and hosted a successful event. Volunteers from the fire company are again running the parking and helping with traffic and crowd control, the races and more.

About 60 race boats from 13 different classes will be traveling to the event, some from as far as Canada and Florida.

Gates open at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7. A beer garden opens at noon . Food concessions will be provided by Latitude 41. An ice cream truck will also be on site. No outside coolers, drinks or lunch boxes will be allowed in the park. All attendees should bring chairs and blankets for seating.

This is a fully sanctioned and insured event through the American Power Boat Association. The boats are competitively racing for points throughout the season. Speeds range from 80 to 150 miles per hour, depending on the boat type. "This event is being hosted to bring an exciting spectator event to the local area while utilizing the beautiful geographic setting of Browns Point," said Hardy.

For directions, use 2020 Greenwood Lake Turnpike, Hewitt on the GPS.

Spectators will be directed to parking areas.
