SeriousOffshore is planning on being there. With it now being double points, no one in the chase for a title can afford to miss it.

When we talked with Bob Teague, he said he planned on running it for sure.

Offshore Powerboats Coming to Race the Detroit River

    By Peggy Walsh-Sarnecki
    August 15, 2014 at 1:04 pm Detroit

More thunder is coming to the Detroit River with the Downtown Detroit International Powerboat Championships, also called the Detroit Grand Prix, Sept. 5-7, sponsored by the Offshore Powerboat Association.
The course will be a four-mile oval that will be viewable from either Detroit or Windsor but will be closer to the Detroit shore. Best viewing will be from the Detroit Riverwalk and it’s free to spectators. Bring you chair and a cooler and settle in for some serious offshore racing.
This is an open race – participants could be first time racers, or they could be headed for the national championships in October in Solomons, MD.
They’re expecting about 50 boats in 11 classes. They plan a total of three races, with multiple classes racing within each race.
These are the offshore power boats that are seen more and more frequently in local waters. They can be as small as 20 feet with a 250 horsepower engine, or as large as a 50-foot catamaran capable of going 200 mph.
“We do have quite a bit that are considered local,” said Dee Ungarten, communications director for OPA Racing. That includes entrees from St. Clair, Ruby, Chesterfield, Utica and Fairhaven.
Spectators will also have access to the pits. Negotiations are still underway but Ungarten said they dry pits will likely be the General Motors parking are near the Riverwalk. The wet pits will be at the nearby marina.
Friday night will include an autograph session with trucks and boats on display in the dry pits starting at 6 p.m. to give fans an opportunity to talk to drivers.

Powerboats Bring ‘Deck To Deck’ Racing To The Detroit River This Weekend (VIDEO)

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) – The roar of powerboats will return to the Detroit River this weekend for the Detroit River International Powerboat Championships.
This is the first year the event will be in Detroit, with over 40 boats competing.
“Powerboat racing is a part of Detroit’s history. Garwood established powerboat manufacturing here in the 1930s and for years they held powerboat races on the Detroit River,” says Wes Wyatt Chairman of the races in a release. “It’s time to bring back a great tradition, one that is fun for all ages.”
The course will stretch between Joe Louis Arena and Chene Park and will be visible from both the United States and Canada.
On Saturday there will be testing on the waters, along with meet and greets with the racing team. Team members will also take part in the ALS ice bucket challenge about 6 p.m. Saturday . Sunday is the final championship race with the presentation of the Mayor’s Cup, which will be presented by Mayor Mike Duggan.
“All of our boats are within the same horse power,” said Jimmy Jernigan, owner of Steady Pumpin’ race boat. “We will finish the race within 30 seconds of the first to last. That is going to be deck to deck racing.”
Pits for the race will be located in Milliken State Park, with the race taking place in front of the Riverwalk. No tickets are needed.
Proceeds from the event will be donated to Detroit PAL, The Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund, Wayne County Sheriff Youth & Senior Education Fund and the Detroit Firemen’s Fund.

It went pretty well for a first time event I thought.

41 boats showing up at a first time event was a very good turnout in my opinion. (42 boats started races but one boat ran both Class 5 and Class 6).

The event had good viewing from both sides of the course. The background of the casinos in Windsor was kinda cool too.

Getting bad advice is unfortunate, taking bad advice is a Serious matter!!
