    Hey guys,
I have two Young performance Marine 598's EFI. I have the (MSD)distributors and I found rust under the cap along with broken wire runing to the module, needless to say it would not fire. After sitting all winter, So I replaced the module and cleaned it all up, in both distributors. I purchased the modules from auto zone, are these good modules for a marine application???

After setting the base timing to 8 degrees, It sounds great until it gets to 2800-3000 rpms, then is acts like it retards the timing, bogs down real bad. Almost as if its a "limp home mode"

Is there anything that would cause this ???

    Thanks in advance!

Have you called Eddie? He seems to be pretty willing to help everyone and I'm sure if he built the motors he would be more than happy to help solve the problem.

Lmao, actually they built a entire sub division. Crafty little bastards!

On the other side, I spoke with arizona speed and marine, they claim it's the module. Therefore I ordered new msd pickup and modules. I will install them tonight and pray, Sweet Baby Jesus let it sing!

I tried those, fuel pumps are new also. The only thing that changed were the pickup and modules.

One thing for sure. If it's running lean because of a fuel issue, you don't want to puke it......

Talk to Eddie for sure, just in case he does anything specific to that application.

Was the module you replaced an exact duplicate?

Is there a spot to connect a computer for review of the injectors, spark, etc?

Its definitely not lean, I replaced the module with a msd pickup module kit.
Yeah it can be hooked up to a computer/scan tool.

There are numerous possibilities. Does it rev past 3000 in neutral? Are you under load when it won't rev? Have you checked fuel pressure? Is there Air in the high pressure loop? Did you get special mapping in your ECU's, Are all grounds on distributor, ECM's, engines, Do you have all the smart craft sensors in tact? .......

I would not suggest you do anything!!! but let Eddie fix it. The more you mess with it the more irritated he is likely to get.

I was just made of aware of this. Thanks Paul. Give me a call at the shop. I haven't received a call here. If you are trying to call on my cell phone, it doesn't work in the shop with the doors closed up. It's a steel building and it's like a vault when closed up.
I remember you saying the engines were just gone through by someone else. Are you sure they did everything correctly? Have they ever run correctly since they were freshened up? I also remember you saying that they were run prior to setting the timing correctly. You could have easily done some damage. Also, those engines are around 10 years old, so there could certainly be something wrong with the wiring.
I would be glad to help you out. Give me a call at the shop.615-216-7449

I was thinking about this today as I was driving to a service call.

When I troubleshhot a job a customer has messed with before I get a chance to look. I always back track and check over what he has done. You messed with the distributors and timing. I recall a early EFI system merc had released as the 320 EFI. It was a great engine in its day. I had one come in and it was doing what you are describing. I found the timing had been set to the max advance line on the damper. The EFI adjusted itself to run and idle but it would retard itself and it wouldn't go over 3000 rpm. The timing was in fact 32 degrees too far advanced.

After Eddie had posted what he did and thinking about what I witnessed I figured I would share it with you. I have no way of knowing if that is what your issue is but, that will make it do what its doing.

    Good Luck.

    Thanks,
I have set the base timing at 8 degrees, just as Eddie told me too. I jumped the A and B in the DLC, to get it this setting.
Also, the oil pressure is at 55 at idle, the fuel pressure is at 42-43 and never drops as the motor revs.

As far as the map in the ECU, its what Eddie has set for these motors. I have changed nothing in those regards.

As I spoke with Eddie yesterday, he suggested putting it under a load.

From there I am going to do that very thing.

    Thanks again for your info!

The point of my post was to double check the mark on the damper. Some have two lines. One for 0 and another for max advance around 30.

With a stock damper painted it is an easy mistake to make. Obviously I can't see yours but, it is an easy to double check the mark you set it to.

What ever it is I hope it is something easy and inexpensive to correct.

    Good luck.
