PRESS RELEASE

New Zealand Offshore Powerboat Series
Race Six - Wellington

Saturday 14th April 2012

Wellington once again provided plenty of heart stopping moments for the crowds when the New Zealand Offshore Powerboats held the sixth race of their 2012 season. With the wind blowing from the south it was cold but remarkably calm in the harbour with teams looking forward to a fast and furious race. Whether it was speed or the typically unpredictable water, the race was dominated by a series of incidents that show once again why this sport, like all Motorsport is risky. Both the crowds and the competitors themselves are drawn to it because of the thrill and excitement of man and machine dealing with the elements and each other........

'Fairview' driven by Warren Lewis and Andrew Koolen turned across the back of Alimax and failed to clear their stern, running into their engine on the way through. The impact was enough to spin Alimax, causing them to dig in and flip over. Fortunately no one was injured in the incident and both the crew from Alimax were able to get out of the upturned hull and climb aboard while assistance arrived. The race officials quickly stopped the race and as the accident took place in the early stages of the race the boats were able to reassemble for a second start........

In the sixty mile classes the drama continued with the Batboat 'Back2Bay6' flipping and the crew, Glen Powell and co driver for the day Greg were both treated in Hospital for injuries sustained in their unexpected exit from the boat. After transferring to a support vessel to get back to shore the seemingly
undamaged boat was towed off the course until the race was completed.......
