Peters & May Teams Up With Lucas Oil and Janet Wilson to Promote New Line of Children's Books

"Lucasville Legends" to Help Reluctant Readers Through Exciting Racing Themes

A new series of books revolving around racing have been created for children and teens by Lucas Oil, US-based engine oil leader, and Janet Wilson, freelance writer/producer and racing manager, with assistance in the online program through Peters & May, international shipping leader. The series of the books called "Lucasville Legends" were developed to assist a special group, "reluctant readers."

Janet Wilson, team manager for the Scandinavian Offshore Challenge, comprised of pilots Nigel Hook and Michael Silfverberg, regularly produces promotional films and materials for her team, as well as other clients. As she planned prospective promotional programs with sponsor Lucas Oil, they hit on a way to help challenged youth readers by utilizing various extreme sports activities to pique their curiosity, thus interesting them in reading about the teams and racing vessels and vehicles. "Lucasville" is the land they created where racers provide their personal insights and educational information about their sports. The online versions are narrated by the racers so users can incorporate both listening and reading skills while the hard copy versions provide additional reinforcement of the written word and reading repetition. Peters & May Racing sponsors the "Read Along" program which provides an online "sneak peek" into each book as an incentive to buy the book to read more.

"The relationships forged and the good work done through racing is part of what makes us enjoy the sport so much!" states David Holley, CEO, Peters & May. Last year, Holley created the Peters & May Racing brand, an offshoot of the UK parent company, to assist racers and ship their boats around the world. This year, Peters & May Racing is working with roughly 14 teams around the world as a sponsor, logistics expert, shipping agent and now, as a co-sponsor for this educational effort by Lucas Oil.

Lucas Oil has been a major sponsor of a broad spectrum of racing from NHRA Drag Racing to Offshore Powerboat Racing for many years. Nigel Hook, a National and World Champion in the American Powerboat Association (APBA), racing association has annually carried the Lucas Oil banner, both in the US and in international races, all part of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the Monaco, France-based organization that sanctions all offshore powerboat racing. Peters & May is also the "official marine transport provider" to the UIM, as well as a sponsor for Hook's new SilverHook, Mannerfelt designed boat, built by Mystic Powerboats and racing in the Ocean Grand Prix series in Europe.

Lucas Oil took interest in reluctant readers as part of its "giving back" to the community and especially to youth who idolize racers and can look to them as inspiration. The Lucasville Legends books are designed specifically for the reluctant readers, predominantly boys, aged from second grade into high school. who are: intelligent children interested in reading, but don't read well; children with no interest in reading who tend to fall behind in school; children with learning issues that impede their ability and willingness to read, or the child who reads well, but has little interest.

"Everyone is very excited about these books, not only for their educational value, but also because of their broad reach-- kids who read the books, parents who purchase them and the grandparents who may read the books with their grandchildren," says Wilson. The creators also believe the original series of four books will become collector's editions, then grow with popularity. The first are on Morgan Lucas, NHRA Top Fuel drag racer, Heidi Steele, off-road racer, Michael Wiskus, stunt plane flyer and Nigel Hook and Michael Silfverberg in the SilverHook race boat.

"We are so pleased to assist in this effort with Lucas Oil and Janet, who has written a very clear and easy to understand look into a variety of racing venues," states Holley, "As a parent, I recognize the importance of reading skills, and as a race fan, I appreciate the interest that young boys and girls have in excitement and things that go fast. As a professional, I'm pleased to offer some financial support to an effort that can help kids everywhere enjoy both reading and racing!"

Peters & May has over 30 years of experience in shipping yachts and boats across the globe. The company added a US base near Chicago, Illinois several years ago, then added an office in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to expand its services to boats of all sizes. The racing tie-in seemed a natural expansion, as boats of many classes and sizes move around the world in a variety of race organizations. "Like Lucas Oil, we see the value of 'giving back' to support the sports that are a part of our business and our enjoyment," says Holley, "We all benefit and with youth, we help grow that benefit for the next generation."

Maybe the new Lucasville Legends will help save kids from being Lucasville inmates, as Lucasville is already the name of the town with the southern Ohio prison that had the longest and bloodiest riots in US history.
