I was talking to someone this weekend who had a reccent USCG safety check. Supposedly the CG told this person that you didnt need flares in you had a SOS flashlight.

    Anyone else heard this?

The boat has to be less than 16 feet long to pass the signal flashlight rule.

Take FLARES out of your vocabulary and replace with Visual Distress Signals VDS. Depending on where you are operating your boat you may be required both day and night VDS. A proper light may replace pyrotechnic VDS, AKA "Flares"
