Late this season one of my engines started running rough. Checked plugs and they were fouled. Replaced and problem began again and I realized the choke was staying closed or mostly closed always and they fouled at low RPM idling in/out of the marina.
The chokes don't seem to help with starting either as these engines have the typical Weber starting problems if they sit and fuel bowls drain back.
So I'm considering removing/disconnecting the chokes. Is there any reason I shouldn't ?
and
what's the best way to disconnect them ?
Thanks in advance,
ed

If you were here in Texas I would disconnect them. I think since you are where the water is cold and the season has a great variation of temp I would suggest trying to get the choke to work properly.

replace the thermostatic choke spring and adjust it to spec. Simple job.

Should be a part of the choke rebuild kit.
And thats actually a Carter AVS Carburetor so you might go with that info to a speed shops desk and just buy the choke spring kit from there.

Offshore Racing wasnīt designed to be a spectator sport, it's for people or companies with's lots of money to push the envelope of endurance technology and hopefully put a trophy on a mantle. It's man vs the elements, not like boats with like engines running in circles.

We have no problems here in Central Illinois running without chokes. Lots of Nickerson 4150's on our lake with the choke towers removed. I have a buddy that has your same motors and we switched them over to Edelbrock RPM Air Gap manifolds and Holley 4150's and the difference was well worth the investment. Motors fire every time on first crank and he even picked up a little top end speed. Simple swap but you will need to use a longer hose from the recirculating pump to the t-stat housing. A 525SC hose was a perfect fit.
