Saw this one at my marina yesterday. Never saw anything like it around here. Would be interested in any history on this 1977 40 footer. First 3 letters on the HIN were PER.

    Rogue,
That boat used to be at Venition Marina in Sandusky for a while. It has to be a splashed hull. If I remember rightly I think I remember seeing an old cig race boat that looked exactly the same.

I would venture to say it is a Performer 40` The company was started and owned by Billy Elswick of Longshot and night moves fame. He basically copied a forty Cig. and made a 36 and forty from it. One of his first race boats was a performer, Will Hoover in N, Miami was his crew chief and rigger, Boat was called nightmoves and first race was Newport, Calif. I am guessing 1978 era ????? Same time I ran with Rocky in new light weight 38 Bertram Benihana #5 all white boat. They were built with the best materials money could buy, many were Kevlar.

Hey Richie you beat me to the punch....How's everything going my friend???? I remember Performer from back in the early, early eighties....Back then I was very discriminating if it wasn't the big red 1 or Larry Smith it wasn't dick!!! I also need to throw Bertram and Magnum in there as well!!!!!
    God forgives.....The 1% doesn't!!!!!!

Richie is right on as usual......here is the photo of that boat that is in our new book....Blue Water Warriors, the Golden Era of the Deep Vee Offshore Race Boats.....1970 to 1980.

Way back when....Bill brought a Performer triple sterndrive boat, for his '77 Miami Boat Show boat....very unusual back then.

The stuff was so heavy in those days, His logic was simple if it does not run with Two motors then just add a third, Night Moves came in to our shop for work and in its Bilge was a box wrench with a three foot extension welded too it to reach the motor mounts. The five p’s come into play here.
Billy also brought in a 40 he tried to break in half down from each side of the cockpit. The Guy was fearless as they came.

My thoughts were in those days: the 36 should have been 38 proof is if you look at how nice the 37.5 Midnights ran back then and how hairy the 36 Cigarettes were @ 89-90 MPH and the 40 a 42 footer since Triple power was being used.

I used to laugh. When I first started getting it to this I would see every boat this one guy worked on had cut skegs.

Back then the drives where so deep that the gearcase above the prop "Was The Skeg". It wasn't until The 38' Cougar Cat Favya Made a Mocked up extension box (at Lake X) and raised the drive to Mock an arneson drive for prop hight that anyone needed a skeg. Now most of the drive is out of the water and the skeg is needed to steer. Btw, That was the fastest offshore Boat to ever cross the lake when they figured out the right hight for the prop, it outshined the arneson in Trimability.
